The Crown - Netflix

I think the casting is decent - Diana is great; it’s easy to forget just how pronounced her mannerisms were.

The Queen is also OK, they needed to get her ways as opposed to doing an impression. It’s Phillip I don’t like, coming across as some sort of kindly old benefactor with massive eyebrows.

To me, the actress portraying Anne looks the spit of the actress that used to play Margaret when she was young?
The period between about 1991 and the Golden jubilee was tricky for the Royals. Phillip was a frequent source of ridicule in the tabloids for his gaffs and the Queen was seen as aloof.
I also thought this about Anne and Vanessa Kirby, but they’ve always said Anne was very like Margaret anyway havent they?

Why were the public falling over themselves fawning over Diana but Kate Middleton gets a much more muted response nowadays? Have times changed so much?

I really think the cast has been best by people I didn’t know (Clare Foy, Josh O’Conner, Princes Anne series3&4) People I know Jonathan Pryce, Imelda Staunton, Olivia Colman, Dominic West) not so much, it’s like they’ve been stunt cast. Surprised by Dominic West as I thought he’d have got Charlie’s voice, mannerisms much better than he has.
I read somewhere that Dominic West didn't want his performance to end up being an impersonation of Charles so the mannerisms are quite muted.

I've just got to see the Queen Mother for the 1st significant time. I see what you all mean, AWFUL casting. Al Fayed is good isn't he!

I don’t mind if the actors don’t look like the characters but she really doesn’t get the right mannerisms. Same for the Blair actor. He just fell flat for me and didn’t have the smarminess.

People are just less into the royals nowadays? I think if social media had been around back then, Diana would have been more of a Markle type.

Kate Middleton is 'vanilla'. She toes the line, doesn't rock the boat, smiles, waves, pops out heirs, does what she is told. Not much to write or rave about there. Diana was controversial, and used the press to tell her side of the story against the Royals through leaks etc all the time. I agree too that people are not as obsessed with The Royals nowadays. They are only really interested in a scandal. No one expects them to be a good example or role models for anyone anymore.

Celebrity culture didn't exist back then. Not like now. There was Hollywood for glamour but we didn't really know much about them beyond movies and official pr. Pop stars were generally for younger people and British actors were respected but nor generally seen as interesting or glamorous. Reality tv etc didn't exist.

The royal family were seen more as distant and stoic, and then comes along this young beautiful woman who is more personable and tactile snd fasion forward just at a time when society itself was moving in that direction away from stiff upper lip.

These days anyone can have their five minutes of fame and we all have access to so many more influences. I think Kate does well all things considered, but she maybe does lack the more natural out going aspect Diana had.

Diana really was a one off that came along at the right time. Today she probably wouldn't be seen as anyone special.

Not a fan of hers by any means but I can see why she was as big as she was.

Actually, one thing that occurred to me as being weird while watching this show is that Kate wears Diana’s ring. Yes, she was William’s mum and it’s nice to keep hold of it, but there are so many negative images around that ring. I could see her wanting to wear it if it was a happy marriage, but the marriage was so bad that they’ve made several movies and TV shows about it! And it’s an iconic ring too. Even if you weren’t alive at time time, we’ve all seen the engagement photos. Anyway, just struck me as odd.

Not really, to William it was his mother's ring and there is nothing more meaningful than that

Does anyone in the know know whether Penny Knatchbull was Philip’s mistress? Am I being naive to think they were just friends?

We will never know but there have always been rumours. But also men and women can never be friends in many peoples eyes.

I always thought it was odd. Yes, to William, it's his mother's ring, so keep it as a memento. Dont foist an ugly dated ring that is a symbol of one of the Most disastrous Royal marriages of the modern era onto your new bride!

I don't think Philip and Penny were ' just friends', at least not until much later. There are suggestions in the Royal Family thread that she is his daughter, but I think it's naive to think all the rumours about Phil shagging about are all false.

But passing on something that means a lot to the person you love means far more than just buying a new ring. Plus its a chance to correct tge history of the ring. I completely get why William did it.

I think he probably did too, especially as its a common concept in the aristocracy. As long as the queen knew and it was agreed then i dont care one way or another tbh.
