The Beatles

Mine were 180 each, I gulped at the price but then I realised I'm going to be seeing an actual Beatle! Paul McCartney is a very significant part of my life 😆
Exactly and you'll remember this for the rest of your life. There's no price on memories like that. I was very close to the front when George played the Albert Hall and that was such a special night. I'll never forget when the audience was all singing along to Piggies and he said "Wow, you guys know all the words!" He looked so genuinely thrilled at the warmth of the audience. Another Beatle gone far too soon. So even more reason to enjoy every minute of Paul's concerts.

Told my sister who is a complete Paul is dead conspiracy oddball that I have tickets to see Paul McCartney, she replied "no you haven't"
Some of the conspiracy stuff is absolutely barking. Mainly by Americans who clearly don't understand the Liverpudlian sense of humour. Some of it is interesting though and I'm sure that duplicates were used at times but I'm also sure that it's not coincidence that both Paul and John lost all their puppy fat as they got more heavily into drugs and their faces changed dramatically very quickly at the end of 1966/beginning of 1967.

One "conspiracy" I'm fully on board with is the theory that John wasn't shot by Mark Chapman and he was merely the patsy. Looking at the evidence is absolutely fascinating and rather compelling.

I'm actually curious about this: what is the evidence? I thought that with the shooting happening in public, it was an open-and-shut case.

A patsy is a scapegoat, or somebody innocent who's designated to take the blame. Lee Harvey Oswald famously said it when he was picked up for JFK's murder.

Crikey I could fill a whole thread with the evidence. There are some great vlogs on YouTube worth watching. And that's the thing, he wasn't shot in public, it was inside the Dakota Building.

I thought he was shot just outside the Dakota. I'm not anti Yoko and I hate that she copped a lot of racist and exist abuse in the British press after hooking up with John. But sometimes wonder if she wanted John out the way. Equally, I wonder if the FBI or US government did it. The FBI were surveiling him in the 70s. I feel terrible for thinking that but I'm feeling more cynical as I get older. I also think Oswald was a patsy. Either Jedgar or mob did JFK in.

Yes I thought he was shot outside the Dakota too, I think that was all part of the cover-up of what really happened. I too strongly suspect she wanted rid of John. She was already living with another man at the time of his death. All the lovey dovey stuff was fake AF.

I think that too with the lovey dovey stuff. She married Sam Havadtoy shortly after. I think John needed her more than she needed him. They both had their affairs too. His with May Pang was well documented but Yoko wasn't going without either. I want to like her. On paper she is a strong independent woman, a feminist, someone who managed to have a career and children. She didn't let criticism hold her back. But on the other hand she wasn't a present mother to Kyoko, she used suicide threats to advance her affair with John. She treated Cynthia and Julian very cruelly too. He should never have been reduced to buying his own things back at auction. And she had or still has a whole room dedicated to fur coats in the Dakota. She is a very shrewd and I suspect, ruthless business woman. She was buying a lot of properties and making investments when John had his house husband stint. Conversely, I hate that Yoko is a constant scapegoat used for blaming the Beatles for breaking up. They would have done so without her, they were going in different directions creatively by 1969. Ultimately, I think Yoko is a complex character who can be difficult to like. If she did have anything to do with John's murder than she is outright evil. I sincerely hope not though especially for the sake of his sons.

It's quite incredible how well adjusted Paul McCartney seems to be considering that he's easily one of the most famous living people in the world for several decades now. I know a few musicians who've worked with him and they all say how unassuming he is and, contrary to the rumours of him being tight, they've always been paid well.

John was a much more problematic person.

I've mentioned before here but I do think a lot of John's issues stemmed from his bloody awful childhood. Yes, Paul lost his mum as a child too but Paul's family appeared more stable and supportive (and of course were working as musicians).

Agreed. I think Paul is a natural people pleaser and loves to play because he just loves music so much. He can play any instrument he turns his hand to. He has amazing talent. He had a very loving stable family compared to John. I know Mimi loved John but I don't think she showed it very often. At the end of the day though, she would not have been enough for him. An adopted child usually yearns for their bio parents. If John were alive now, I wonder what he would be like. Would he have mellowed and taken accountability for his violence? Would he still be very political? Would he have moved back to England? I would like to think that he would have teamed up on the Anthology project and enjoyed it. Ah well, we'll never know now.

I feel like somebody should study Paul to find out how he's stayed the course as a man in the public eye. I went to see 'One Hand Clapping' at the weekend and I was struck by how much he loved being in a studio, creating music, working with others. Clearly just wanted to be with Linda the whole time. At a time when he could have easily spent his days driving a succession of Rolls-Royces into swimming pools, or whatever jaded rockers got up to in the 1970s. (I also think he never got over the impulse to try to impress John, the ultimate cool, older brother figure...)

I saw One Hand Clapping at the weekend too, and as daft as it sounds it just reminds me of what an incredibly talented musician he is. I’ve been lucky enough to have seen him live 9 times, and yes his voice isn’t what it was (well he is 82) those of you who are going to see him are in for a real treat. New album coming out too apparently.
