The Beatles

My dad lived on penny lane for a while. I always find it funny that people go take photos of the sign when i used to walk past it all the time 🙈🤣

I think it's hard with hindsight for my generation (90s kids) to fully appreciate how influential the beatles actually were. The stories of fans etc are insane. I can't imagine hero worshipping anyone that much.

Don't mind their music and I think it's probably inevitable that so much fame quite young would mess anyone up but Ringo seems like the best of the bunch

I loved the Beatles film Help! Where their houses are all joined together. I Loved Ringo in that.

Help! Is my favourite. Much better than A Hard Days Night IMO. I like how the other three basically become a supporting cast to Ringo. He’s the main ‘character’ in all their films. Ive always wondered if that was deliberate because he didn’t really write any of their material 😂 (apart from Octopus Garden obviously, but it’s rumoured George actually wrote that and let Ringo take the credit).

I've always believed that Paul got a bit of a bad rap. A lot of peoples perception of him and the Beatles as a whole stem from Johns 'Lennon Remembers' interview with Rolling Stone in the early 70's.
John later backtracked on a great deal of what he said in that interview and admitted to lying but the damage was done.

John, and to a lesser degree George really had the knives out for him and he was publicly slammed quite a bit.
Other than a couple of lines on 'Too Many People' he never really went for the jugular.
John on the other hand was really vicious on 'How do you Sleep'. I always thought well of Ringo for standing up and walking out of that session.
John and George for all their Peace and love and Hare Krishnas could be quite hypocritical.

Random post but I absolutely love Norwegian Wood, is there a story behind that one that anyone knows of?

I'm pretty sure it's about an affair that John had. I think he stated it was in later interviews. Norwegian wood was a reference to the cheap wood panelling in the woman's flat. The lighting a fire bit was just a bit of story that John and Paul came up with.

Thanks for that! I've always thought it was a peculiar song but for some reason it just really appeals to me!

Imagine is about communism folks and has not a Beatles song.
The Imagine discourse came about because on the celeb gossip thread there’d been discussions about The Beatles and John Lennon, and suddenly a few people popped up to confess they’ve never liked Imagine but had been afraid to admit it! 🤣

Then someone asked for a Beatles thread, and here we are.

Well they say love is blind ... and clearly deaf too.
This made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂😂

Haven't heard much about him but that he beat his first wife Cynthia up a lot
He treated his eldest son badly and just seem to dump him when Yoko came along. As for Paul he always comes over as super arrogant in interviews. Now Ringo, here's a story, I used to work in an animal hospital in central London and before my day Ringo had expressed an interest in adopting a cat from the charity. He turned up in a Rolls and was nice to everyone he then insisted that the nurses get into his rolls and told his chauffeur to drive them round the London sights at night. He was a legend in that charity and he ended up adopting an old moggie, top bloke.
Ah that’s a lovely story.

How can I not join in! Thank you so much for starting this thread. I've been a lifelong Beatles fan. I can’t think of any other band who made such fast musical progression across the short time they were together. I find it incredible that Please Please Me and Abbey Road were recorded seven years apart. Seven years!

Me too! The pace of change in the 60s was extraordinary. The Beatles 1964 v 1967.

They were the world's biggest every group. They could have churned out She Loves You over and over again, taking the safe route. They didn't - they really did push pop music forward in so many ways, being innovative and prolific but still maintaining the same high level of songwriting.

I'll never understand anyone who says they don't like The Beatles. The amount of styles they covered was so wide and all-encompassing that it's a ridiculous statement - there are Beatles songs for everyone.

I grew up on The Beatles, I was born in 1970, at school we sang Beatles songs in our music class, to me they are the best band in the world, I had a crush on Paul, I loved Wings and a couple of 80s songs, not many No more lonely nights I loved, The long and winding road makes me cry! Georges Something is beautiful, when I was younger Imagine didn't appeal to me but now I appreciate it. My neice started Paul McCartneys music school in Liverpool last September, musically she is very talented she is 18 and is also a big fan. Everybody loves at least one Beatles song don't they? I just cannot speak highly enough of them. I even have canvases on my walls of them, I also love Elvis, but if I had to choose its The Beatles all day, and they are English and that makes me so proud. They still hold a lot of records even today after all this time.

Watching the Get Back doco, it’s amazing the chemistry between John and Paul. They will always have unfinished business
I totally loved Get Back. It was clear it was lovingly edited by fans and was such a different story to Let It Be. For example, I had no idea they had played the songs several times on the roof. From Let It Be it appeared that the songs were sung once and then they had to leave the roof in a bit of a hurry. From Get Back it felt much more leisurely on the roof.

Best bit of Get Back: seeing Get Back the song from inception to rooftop performance, absolutely fascinating to see the song writing/creating process from start to finish. Worst bit: realising The Beatles could have continued to work together on ad hoc projects while all having solo careers if only they'd actually communicated with each other properly! Obviously only if Billy Preston became part of the band, though :ROFLMAO: They were a mess on Get Back until Billy showed up and brought the good vibes. Paul's face when Billy starts playing for the first time, it's such relief that they're making great music again.

Best part of that documentary was watching Paul come up with such gems as Get Back on the spot. What an unbelievable songwriting talent he was.

Lennon had clearly checked out of the band by then - thank Christ Paul was there to keep the back going.

Even the "argument" they had that was recorded secretly in that film was so respectful - there was still clearly a lot of love between the two of them.

That documentary made me love The Beatles even more and I didn't think that was possible.

I'm not sure John had checked out of The Beatles. Don't forget that Yoko had had a miscarriage just before they started filming and both John and Yoko were self medicating with heroin during the filming. John even references his heroin use in Get Back, much to Paul's alarm. Given the circumstances, I think the quality of the work John produced is remarkable.
