Teen Mom USA (The Next Chapter and Family Reunion) #5

Even though Amber clearly hasn’t been a consistent parent and is completely self-centered…she does love Leah. With Gary having custody, not really sure what the purpose would be of Christina adopting Leah. If Gary died, it would mean Amber can’t get custody, that would be the most logical reason for wanting it…but Leah is 14/15 already, and seeing as Christina raised her and for practical purposes she has been her mother she should have a decent chance of getting legal custody through the courts if it ever came to that anyway. Gary isn’t working away such as in the military so it’s there is no issue like having no parent at home to sign medical forms etc. if Gary has done the decent thing and put Leah’s share of the tv appearance fees into a trust fund she should also have that as financial support if he died before she is fully independent.

I know in earlier series Leah didn’t want contact with Amber and Gary kept inviting her over and giving the chance for the relationship to repair. But he didn’t force Leah to be alone with her, so unless Amber is trying to force unwanted contact, there isn’t a reason from Gary’s perspective to want to cut Amber completely from their lives. He’s not perfect…his patience has been tested many times…but overall he has repeatedly tried to keep Amber in Leah’s life, even though it must at times put a strain on Christina and it’s not even clear that it’s good for Leah. I think he took the view that she’s her mother, no matter how useless, they should try to have a relationship even if it’s a minimal part of Leah’s life.

The amount of times Amber has publicly slagged them off and then been forgiven is unreal. I think they just realise there are mental health issues and accept it. They’ve done plenty to support her such as offer for her to live on their property and go with her to her trashed home.

Unless something major has happened, I think it’s poor form for Gary to allow Leah to be expressing this publicly. Privately it’s a valid question for her to want to ask. Although Amber makes no effort to be a mother…she has always been consistent in that she loves her daughter and wants her to visit etc, I’m not aware of her ever not actually wanting her child. So for her child to say on tv she basically wants to disown her mother could be a cruel blow to Amber. Although Christina is effectively her mother, and that’s obvious to all who follow the show, there’s no need to have a child blatantly pushing to cut her out of her life on the show. Some damage to relationships can be permanent…and Leah talking about this on tv could ruin her relationship with Amber life-long. Leah is still a child and won’t know yet how she will feel as an adult towards her mother.

We had Chelsea go to the opposite extreme with Aubree. She spent much of a series deliberating over whether she was old enough for a mobile phone. She turned minor parenting issues into a storyline for the tv obligations while failing to discuss her issues about Adam…which is what mtv probably wanted from Aubree. Chelsea tried to avoid making her child the centre family rifts/rows on tv now that she’s old enough (and her schoolfriends) to be aware the aftermath of when this stuff airs.

Same with Maci, she tends to discuss without Bentley being present the situation with Ryan and anytime she prevents contact and restricts it to only while grandparent are present has been due to obvious dangers due to his drug use. I’ve never noticed her wanting Bentley to let Bentley be negative about Ryan on tv, I think it may have slipped in at times, but overall she’s protected him from saying too much…which could have damaged his relationship with Ryan.

There’s nothing wrong with Leah deciding to call Christina ‘mom’ and considering her to be her main mother, but it seems very unnecessary to have her considering her options regards her future relationship with Amber on tv.

I don’t think any of them owe Amber anything but I highly doubt an adoption would happen anyway as I’m sure it would mean Gary can’t collect a child support cheque anymore…. I personally think they’ve all been nice to Amber and put up with her bullshit for the ££££ she provides and the ££££ the show also provides. If the show didn’t exist I can bet Gary and Leah would’ve cut ties with Amber completely many years ago.

I agree, I can't imagine an adoption happening, it would take alot for that to occur. I really feel for Leah, she is clearly so hurt by Amber.

Maci showed Bentley's counselling sessions about Ryan, she definitely spoke about the situation on TV and exploited the poor kid.

I agree it doesn’t make sense for Leah to suddenly want Kristina to adopt her, especially since her relationship with Amber has been better as shown on recent episodes, Leah’s age, and the fact they can’t collect child support anymore. Unless something f significant has happened, Amber has been absent from quite alot of the new episodes unless she actively avoided the reunion due to it revolving around alcohol consumption. Maybe it’s a storyline which would be poor show on Gary’s part to allow that

Gary's very overweight/unhealthy looking and isn't he also training or trained as a cop, which is a risky job in the US?
Maybe Leah wants to be sure if anything happens him before she's 18 that she stays with Christina and her sibling.

It's not a bonkers idea and I've heard in real life of teens being adopted by step parents.

Gary's made a nice life for his kids, I doubt the decision will come down to wanting amber's child support cheques.

Having said all that, letting Leah discuss it in screen was exploitative by both Gary and by MTV

Could be that however I think Gary has lost weight recently and he’s been involved with the police for a while. Unless something has happened to them personally. I do think they aren’t struggling for money but I don’t think they’d still be on tm if they didn’t want more money coming in than they have tbh. But I guess we will never know the context as the show is so staged and edited now, and the cast are pretty much private on sm now as well apart from a few fiery ones

It’s not odd at all for Leah to explore the idea of being adopted by the woman who raised her. It’s just very poor taste to allow her to explore that on a tv show that is broadcast not only in her home country but around the world (I’m in UK). Gary can’t know how it will be edited and portrayed, he doesn’t know how it will affect public feeling towards Leah, her future relationship with Amber and her general future once she is independent. When she’s 25 will she want every random person she meets asking her the situation with her mother? It would be better to end teen mom as it already stood, with her having a light relationship with her in good terms. That way whenever she is asked she can just say “it’s good, we talk regularly” and no-one would enquire further.

I’m wondering when teen mom will end? These people are clearly not struggling parents, they are highly paid reality stars. The problem now with starting with a fresh batch of teens is that they are now very aware of the financial benefits of reality tv….they will amp up the drama and fakeness to try to keep themselves in the next series. What a new series needs is genuinely crazy people like Farrah and her mother, although they embraced the reality star lifestyle and staged a few things, they never stopped genuinely arguing with each other. I’ll never forget Farrah having her father drive for 5 days a removal truck with her car towed behind to a location he didn’t even want her to move to, while she took the relaxed approach and flew out, she then proceeded to heckle him while he was lugging her furniture from the van. Or her lack of gratitude for her mother renting her on the cheap a house she owned and her immediately moving a puppy in without permission. Her behaviour was always unhinged, even once she got rich and learned how to create fake storylines that side of her never settled down. The teens and their parents now would be so self-aware, I’m not sure the same tv can be made again.

once the original kids turn 16, so just this one or two more seasons, surely that’s the time to call it quits? Otherwise the teen moms will end up being grandmas on the show.

Surprised really that they even keep Amber on the show, it’s mostly her sat in her own complaining. I’m sure she just stays in bed all day and then glams up for filming. She’s also not comfortable in big social situations so isn’t an easy candidate for the reunions.

I don’t think tm will end without flogging every different angle. It’s gone from being about the children to going the same way most reality shows with younger/certain age cast members on. Ply them with alcohol and see what happens. Of course they throw in a therapist or 2 to make it seem like they care about the casts wellbeing and it’s not just a tit show for entertainment. I believe it will end when people literally stop watching. They should have took better care of the cast who actually had entertaining qualities and not made-for-tv like Corey. I’d love to see a series of just kail and her family (I know not everyone likes them). Chelsea has her own show now, I don’t like home makeover progs so haven’t watched it. I’d even watch Jenelle and family if it included Barb!

It will continue for a while. The fan base is still there. Plus the oldest kids are not far from leaving school. So that will be shown

I think Gary still holds a bit of love for Amber not so much as get back with her as like he kind of treats her like another child. I believe he thinks Leah should have a bond with her too and I think he may feel slightly guilty for moving on with Kristina when he said he would wait for Amber while she was in jail even tho him and Amber were toxic and would never work

Someone on Reddit said this is Rhine’s GF?! I never knew this. I remember this scene so well
