The issue isn’t just “the evil tories” though, it’s:
- An extremely unhealthy population (majority of adults being overweight or obese)
- A population living longer with complex co-morbidities: about 40% of the UK are aged 50+, many living with things like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases etc.
- Doctors can afford to retire earlier than other professionals in healthcare and it takes 10+ years to train a specialist; we’ve got capped medical school places to due to a lack of placement spaces and many junior doctors want to train part time when they graduate from med school - meaning it’s taking even longer to get specialists - explaining the workforce lags
- If you watch programmes like 24 Hours in A&E it’s always old people bleeping falling over and hurting themselves cos they’re too stubborn to go into a care home where they belong - because there’s so many issues with social care and care homes (again yes Tories haven’t helped but see also increase in people being old with complex needs)
