someone here said he’s “playing the role of a contestant of strictly” and that’s always how it comes across. it makes me so awkward.

Exactly! There was an episode of Midsomer Murders a few years back centred on a Strictly-esque dance competition and they had Tom Chambers, Natalie Gumede and Danny Mac playing contestants, and they all very much had "Will Mellor" energy on it, of soap actors playing the part of steely-edged competitive dancers, hyper-aware of how they were coming across to the watching police/audience.

Will would have fit right in on that episode. Strictly itself? It comes over as a little false. He just seems so itchy in his own skin all the time.
