Tbf, there is zero evidence anything is going on between Maisie and Kai - the tabloids write stuff like that about nearly every Strictly couple and it's nearly always nonsense. Both seem like lovely people but I wouldn't have thought they were that compatible in that respect

The photos last night did seem to be a close up from a meal where several people were having meal together , not just the 4 of them. Neil and Nadiya were around too in other reports. Yes the press are scum, and will twist anything in desperation for a story. They really have it in for Maisie though, and that is not on!

I think the intense shipping of couples from the past two years kinda comes from the whole "strictly curse" reputation of the show. Like a lot of viewers are trying to see which couple is going to turn romantically linked. However, since 2018 no couples came out of the show. Granted in 2018, 3 actual couples were in the final so that was quite a lot but none since. And people now kinda want an announcement of a relationship the day after the final because that's what Joe sugg did. But that’s just an unrealistic thing to expect from every contestant ever.

I wasn’t sure if Giovanni and Ashley got together until after the 2018 series finished? Obvs they weren’t dancing together so I assumed it was like Gorka and Gemma and they got together afterwards.

I think part of it is too that some pros add an element of pretending there’s something going on, or “let’s just not confirm or deny if people are speculating” (the latter being the category AJ and Kai were in for me).

That’s true! But they do bring up her smoking etc.
She’s an adult ( although a young one) , I’m sure she’s seen worse, just feel for her.

Theres a very strange vibe on there. They are quite patronising about Kai, making out he's this young, simpering lad who doesn't know how to cope with things and is spending his days pining for AJ but can't express his feelings while AJ is traumatised and has fled the country to avoid the tour as she's so distraught.

I’m quite anti-smoking because my mum died of lung cancer (when she was 17 someone said to her it would help her lose weight ). I’m not a militant anti-smoker and it’s none of my business but I have to say, if she’s smoking and can pull off that samba then that’s pretty impressive!

Just a brief summary as I could write an essay.
You know I love the pair of them - together on the dance floor and separately. I’ve read pretty much every article written, watched all their insta posts/stories, listened to podcasts, old programnes they’ve been in, so got a pretty good idea of their backgrounds.
I’m 100% sure there was at least a fling between them during those 4 months, they were intense and way beyond anything I’ve seen before ( plus she never shut the rumours down, although I know she has history) , they are hot, single and why the hell not?
But - the ankle injury seems to have caused the end of something. I think they mutually friendzoned after that. She ( by what she has indicated) has been too upset to talk about the injury much and whatever else surrounded it, and is probably using this time away to reset and work on her career and be the queen she most definitely is.
So in conclusion- he can do what he likes with Maisie, he’s a young, handsome, single male that could have anyone.
I’m still a massive fan of both of them and look forward to whatever they do next.

Eta - Maisie is a very pretty girl, her smoking is a right turn off though!

I personally feel like Strictly is an intense, unique environment that is a rollercoaster of emotions for the contestants which can result in very strong, affectionate bonds being formed that are sometimes mistaken for romantic love.

Half the country was convinced that Rose and Gio were in love and even the way John and Johannes acted with each other may have been mistaken for romance out of context because they clearly had a lot of adoration for each other. The fact that both Rose and John are both in presumably happy, long term relationships and yet still have these relationships with their pros to me says that you can have a very deep, tactile, even flirtatious bond with somebody and have it still be platonic. I genuinely think AJ and Kai’s relationship was probably the same but ‘you see what you want to see’ (as is the case for most shipping) and because they were both single people assumed it had to be more than that.

I’ve seen KJ shippers say ‘but how could they act this way or say ___ to each other and it still be platonic?” but I feel like there have been many couples in Strictly history that have said or done things of a similar calibre (including Rose/Gio and John/Johannes this year) with it not evolving to anything more.

I do appreciate your mature take on it though. I mean who knows, maybe they are together — I don’t think it’s necessarily a far fetched idea — but I also think that there are potential explanations for their behaviour other than that and a lot of KJ fans/shippers refuse to acknowledge them or are unable to see them.

I remember being really surprised that so many pros smoked, but in some professions it's almost like a communal habit. My husband only gave up a few years ago, and even though he obviously knew it was terrible for his health, it was just how he coped with a stressful, intense job where pretty much everyone else smoked too (he's not a dancer btw lol). There were loads of rumours about Gio and Ashley during the show, and given that they went on holiday together less than a fortnight after the final it was clear they were already together!

AJ has definitely encouraged speculation: who knows why? maybe she found it funny, or maybe there was really something potentially happening. Ranvir did the same last year with liking suggestive comments: it can really backfire, as then shippers get their hopes up, and then even when you deny it they are like 'well why did she like all those comments??'

The tour this year doesn’t seem that exciting to me I didn’t watch the year with Maisie or Max so I don’t care about them. Rose and gio will be good but the other couples were not my favourite from this series. Also the pro dances were shite this year it seems the only good pro dance on the tour will be the Kai and Johannes love story.

Also: I too am tired of people talking about Kai like he’s a child like duck me he’s 26!!

I think it's a case of either a) this is true and she's doesn't want to give it up (even though she's got a better job on DOI, Strictly is still a much bigger show and she does seem to genuinely love it)

or b) she's leaving but can't announce it yet (I think she said something along the lines of they'll be an announcement soon in another interview? Which sounds like decision has been made)

So basically, we're none the wiser

Exactly right. She totally encouraged it - I think there was even a video with her small nephew asking her to kiss Kai which would definitely have been scripted and only done with her approval. I thought it was pretty low at the time to involve a kid like that just to drag fro votes.

It didn’t put me off, but that and the ‘are you going to kiss her’ from Claudia was super cringe. I think they must have had words after that, as it quietened down, and they sort of kept themselves out of trouble ( until the quarterfinals when Salsageddon caused a cuddle on camera fest).
