My understanding of it (I’m Aberdonian born and bred but some Doric words have different meanings in various parts of the north east of Scotland) is a mess or a shambles of a person - a bit like “a hot mess”. I’ve previously referred to Steph as a “clarty midden” because she eats with her mouth open, doesn’t wash her hands often so she’s not just a mess, she’s a disgusting one too

The literal meaning is a dump, usually for household waste - a bit like a compost heap I suppose? Now it’s used to describe something or someone which is a mess/unclean/unsavoury. Eg, I haven’t cleaned for days, this house is a total midden, or tidy yourself up, you look a right midden.
