I used to watch Live & Kicking. But then SM.TV came a long and suddenly L&K seemed really twee and safe in comparison. Kids programmes on ITV were always a bit more edgier (Blue Peter or Fun House anybody? No comparison is it? ). I think Byker Grove was the only kids show on the BBC that no one felt embassed to admit that they watched. Interestingly after L&K ended the BBC tried to make their own edgier Saturday Morning shows to emulate the success of SM.TV. They just couldn’t compete with that winning formula.
Omg there was a group of stuck up kids in my school who LOVED Blue Peter and they had the nickname ‘the snob squad’ don’t know about your area but for us even BBC Radio 1 was uncool despite all the mags promoting it, was local stations all the way for us with the right mix of cheese, chart and club. The BBC kids mags were a bit vanilla too like Live and Kicking’s spinoff mag and the earlier Fast Forward, couldn’t compete with Big or TV Hits! Remember when Ant and Dec moved to Channel 4 and had a show called Unzipped, was targeted at kids but full of innuendo, I remember one episode with Jayne Middlemiss asking ‘do you want me to give you some head’ referring to a pig or some animal on a spit
