This is quite off topic but there’s nowhere else to discuss it - Deborah Orr has died. What a tragedy. The reoccurrence of her breast cancer wasn’t diagnosed until she was riddled with it. Her ex husband (Will Self) forced the sale of the family home, which went through while she was hospitalised and declining. She died before she even got to walk over the threshold of her new house in Brighton. And, apparently, one of her sons took his father’s side and they were estranged.

How awful for her family and friends.

I saw her on Twitter saying that a Guardian article about Aldi dupes was nothing to do with her so I don't think she's responsible for all beauty coverage so don't think she's the editor in that way. This was in the weekday paper so not an Observer piece. JCM is also described as the fashion editor but she seems to do more ie weekday fashion articles. Don't know if it just means flagship columnist.
She did recommend an Aldi dupe hair tool a couple of months ago though.

Edited to say I posted this before reading the Deborah Orr news. Apologies if it read as insensitive

I agree. Time for a shakeup. I can't remember the last time I felt inspired by a SH column.
I was looking up old GtL threads last night and found the £150 Whistles playsuit thing. After that SH said hooray she was a VIP Whistles customer which meant 40% off everything. Someone asked why and she replied (haughtily) that as she wore Whistles in all her videos they were really pleased with her.
Now I then just looked up Whistles in the GtL search thing and so many people said they were buying Whistles because of her and wanted to be a 'Salinista' (I know. Cringe). I wonder how much extra traffic she sent there? It was all a soft sell I suppose. Before things needed to say #ad #kindlygifted. We were all so bloody being played.

That is properly tit. Even if it was technically within the law at the time, it’s not ethical at all.

She is an influencer first and foremost, and has been for a long time. Everything else comes after.

Tragic news.

Oh dear how awful. My brother was ill with cancer for years before he died, and bizarrely I never actually thought he would die, just might live with cancer forever. Sounds silly I know. But people like DO I sort of thought the same. Poor her. She seemed so happy about her move as well.

Awful about Deborah Orr. Could that be why SH is so quiet? Are they friends?

Re the Whistles thing, there’s a lot of soft selling going on as part of “immersive partnerships”. So eg SH has a by-line photo, in a column about eg shower caps, but the thing most people want to know is what her lipstick in the picture is. She tells them it’s eg CT Pillow Talk, links it on her Insta Stories, and they all trot off to buy it. Stealthy.

(I have used this as an example, it happens all over, but this specific example I made up for illustrative purposes, just in case anyone sends the heavies round to my house.)

I only know SH knew DO because of Twitter. Both Guardian journos so presume they do know each other outside of that and SH was going to see her in hospital.
The soft selling is so hard to pin down isn't it. Where does being enthusiastic about a brand and recommending it to your readers/followers cross the line to advertising by stealth? I suppose when you are getting a benefit from that advertisement - I would say any benefit eg 40% discount. It's like the ex GtLer a while ago on here who booked an expensive hair appointment at Herscheson's (sp???) because SH mentioned them so frequently but felt duped when she found out SH got hers for free.

I think they were friends. It looks like she’s got a bit upset on Twitter with one of the comments from another friend. I think Twitter must be a hard place to communicate when you’re grieving.

Oh this got me

I wasn't aware of DO before this. Are there any specific articles that people recommend of hers?

Would partnerships nor publicly disclosed be information covered by the Freedom of Act?
(Must admit I am a fan of foi-ing /sar-ing. My uni were soo slow getting degree marks back it was faster to Subject Access Request them)

I think when there’s a relationship with a brand, it’s a very grey area. There’s a huge difference between a partnership where it’s specified “you will make XY mentions of AB product to fulfil the contract and be paid £££” and “you can get an ongoing 40% discount”, but you could argue that the 40% discount is only being given because you will drive traffic towards that seller, plus the discount might amount to ££££££ over time. Then there’s a whole Venn diagram of connections, so where there’s no paid partnership or discount, but the brand in question was started by a friend.

I think a lot of the partnerships are short term affairs (one Insta story, three posts, done kind of thing) so not sure about FOI.

So many - it’s worth searching her name on the guardian and the Indy and diving into her archives to see what interests you as she covered a wide range of issues.

This is a good one https://www.12ft.io/https://www.the...cond-thoughts-rational-decisions-brexit-trump

Naturally, IK is suggesting the one where DO wrote about IK
