Questions for those who have been through menopause

hi all,

small update with the GP visit i had - i have had my HRT increased in the hope this will help so now i am doing 3 x pumps of gel and have had a Mirena coil fitted. I cant say i have noticed much difference as of yet but it is still very early days so we will see what happens.

I keep forgetting about magnesium @ginger tea . Going to sort this now whilst i am thinking about it ( and vit d3 & 12).

hope everyone is doing ok?

Hi everyone ,

I went back to the doctor yesterday as the paranoia has set in yet again. The doctor I saw previously has now left the surgery and it was her replacement who I saw.

I started explaining why I was there and the GP immediately started questioning 1- why I had perimenopause symptoms at such a young age and 2 - why had I been prescribed HRT because it can cause cancer ( no word of a lie that is what she said).
I didn’t know how to respond to question one - sorry but I am 45 ( soon to be 46) so I don’t think I’m too young. The second part I explained that I had been experiencing changes and had tracked them. On top of this I have had 3 seperate periods of time where I have not had a period for up to 6 months and then they restart. They are either very heavy or very light - sometimes I only have spotting.
anyway.. moving on - her next response was that instead I should have be on fluoxetine i stead as this will settle my moods 🥴. To say I was taken back was an understatement.

She gave me a prescription for the fluoxetine and has told me to stop taking HRT full stop. So I have left the GP yesterday no better off than when I went in ( and with no suggestion as to relooking at dosages or changing anything).
---
PS - i do not believe I need Fluoxetine. I have also thrown the prescription in the bin. I think I am going through perimenopause and to me when she was speaking to me it sounded like she thought I wasn’t. I even mentioned about my periods where I had up to 6 months of no period and then they restarted but no.. fluoxetine is what I need apparantly.

This infuriates me, they always seem to prescribe antidepressants, most doctors don’t have a clue.
I’m so sorry your going through this, the one person you think will understand what your going g through and they don’t fucken listen to you

That’s appalling, and no you’re not too young I was 42 when mine started, took me years to be taken seriously. Keep your chin up, and don’t let them fob you off

Does anyone think I should consider using fluoxetine? I mean maybe it would work. I don’t know what to think about it all. I feel really confused ( the prescription could be retrieved as it’s in a bedroom bin rather than the black one).
I just felt completely thrown when she said that to me - yes I do have some mood related symptoms bought I equally have other physical perimenopause symptoms too .

The GP’s attitude really took me by surprise and at some stages during the consultation I felt I was being attacked for being there ( and WHY I am there at all?) .

Going back to the fluoxetine - my understanding is that this a mood stabiliser . How would this help with the paranoid feelings? It’s not a drug I have ever taken ( or had prescribed before).

just as aside - off the advice ok this thread I have been taking a number of supplements to help with symptoms and now take a vitamin B complex tablet , magnesium and vitamin d once a day. I am also taking starflower every day too.

Send her the NICE guidelines and report her too.

I hadn’t thought about reporting her as I have been focused on her telling me I need fluoxetine but now I think about it she also told me that HRT causes cancer. That is a dangerous message to be saying to other women who are also in perimenopause and who will need the HRT.
I've just googled fluoxetine, it's bleeping prozac

These bloody GPs fobbing people off with antidepressants! I'd avoid her like the plague going forward.

A couple of years ago I went with a joint injury and I was offered ADs (to 'help me cope with the pain') before any treatment was even mentioned. Needless to say I wasn't impressed.

Hi , I’m new to the thread but so angry reading your post my love .
You need oestrogen not anti depressants .
I was already on antidepressants pre hitting menopause at 48. I have anxiety disorder perfectly managed by low dose AD’s and loads of therapy resulting in me training to be a psychotherapist myself. When menopause hit I genuinely thought I was losing my mind . My anxiety was horrific to the point I didn’t want to live . Luckily I soon realised it was the menopause not ill mental health. I told my GP who said the same as yours I wasn’t leaving the surgery until she referred me to the Chelsea and Westminster menopause clinic .
Eventually Estraderm 100 oestrogen patches and Utrogestan tablets ( body identical progesterone ) has been the right regime for me . It took a while to get to the right combination . It gave me my life back . More info on why it’s NOT mental health but menopause is available online . Have a look at this article which explains it .
Perserve and see another GP. Look at Nice guidelines too .

essants.” But the link between menopause and depression is now sufficiently recognised that the NHS prescribing watchdog, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, recommends HRT as a first line of treatment for low mood or anxiety in menopausal women. Yet still, Newson says, she sees women who have been sent away by GPs with nothing but antidepressants. One reason she

This may seem a bit ridiculous, but has anyone divided their progesterone dose, as in taking one before bed and the second when waking at about 3 or 4 am?
I am on Estrodot 100mg, tostran (1 pump every 3rd day) and utrogestan 200mg.
I go to sleep easily but wake in the early hours and can't get back to sleep.

I told the practise nurse that I couldn’t follow the instructions they were too confusing 😬 she told me to use it everyday. So I do a pump on each arm everyday. I don’t know if using it everyday will make a difference. Maybe your waking up is because it’s “wearing off” if you’re not using it everyday? Worth a check?

I get so angry that women are sent away with antidepressants and not proper menopause consideration. It’s disgraceful tbh. I am incredibly lucky that I have a doctor who was fully on board with lots of care and played around with the dosage until I felt ‘like myself’.
Menopause can be brutal on some and the fact that doctors just bat them away is terrible!

Thanks Rothsay but utrogestan doesn't come in a pump it's in pill form....that I take two of every night. It's the progesterone part of my HRT.
I think you're talking about estrogel pump?

Yeah I was. Sorry! I have the pill and the pump, got them mixed up!
