I think Peter was just sick of Katie in the end - like genuinely repulsed by her. I would agree he planned to leave her way in advance.
She seemed to be suffering from postpartum depression, and he was fixated on re-launching his career/getting fit/etc. I remember the episode where she accused him of cheating and he was virtually mocking her over it. By this point you could see he was emotionally detached from the relationship, and let's not get started on the vicious row where he really lays into her in the American store.
I'm pretty sure by this point he'd planned it all out with Claire. On top of all of that he refused to say why he'd left, despite telling every media outlet cryptically "she knows what she did".
Nope. He outgrew the novelty of their relationship and was always going to leave first.
