PCOS

My PCOS sisters! I haven’t been on here forever but 1000% pcos symptoms are getting worse my bellly is getting rounder by the day and my chins hair is so long it could be a pube. Cried to the gp who couldn’t have gave a flying duck. He’s prescribed me a different pill called Zelleta, has anyone been on it before?

I used to get super painful periods that absolutely floored me. Since having laser treatment for endometriosis and two mirena coils that’s no longer an issue to the same extent. However, the general sensation of having my period is so weird now and I struggle to describe it. It’s like something or someone is grabbing my uterus and/or my ovaries and squeezing them. I feel very… inflamed? There is pain but it’s not bent over double, can’t focus pain and I am so grateful for that. But man, days 1 and 2 of my period are a riot.

Sorry, it’s me back again. I’m on holiday somewhere v hot and sunny and it’s great but oh my god, it makes my facial hair grow uncontrollably 🤣 got a beard to rival my husbands at the moment!

Has anyone ever tried electrolysis? I’m tried of plucking the hairs from my chin and I’d rather do something about it so it’s one less thing for me to tackle when it comes to PCOS (with the other main concern being weight gain/lack of weight loss)

I did it quite a bit a few years ago, at least 15 or so sessions in a year. I think it probably helped but didn't stop it completely, I still get the hair. I stopped because it kept making my chin really sore and spotty which just made me feel worse.

Bit different but I got a Philips IPL machine in Black Friday sales a few years ago. I’ve used it on my top lip, underarms, chin and various other areas. It takes a bit of dedication as you need to use it once every 2 weeks at first but once the hair has reduced or stopped you can do touch ups at longer intervals to keep things at bay.

I have extremely dark, coarse body hair and it’s working really well for me. My top lip used to be so dark and grow really rapidly, I hated it. Now it grows much slower and finer. Same with underarms. I only had a couple of chin hairs to deal with but so far they haven’t grown back in over a month!

I realise they are a very expensive device but as I understand it they last a long time so I personally think worth the cost if possible - often on good deals. I think I got mine with about £150 off. I don’t think it’s as long lasting as electrolysis, although tbh I don’t know how the two compare.

Hi all. 15 years of fighting and I now have a new doctor who has listened and understands the struggles of trying (and failing) to lose weight with PCOS.
I've been prescribed metformin as an off label trial. Has anyone had any success with this please?

I've been on Metformin for over a decade, I think, and when not on it, it's definitely noticeable. There's a bit of an adjustment when starting it, particularly with your stomach, but it really helps with insulin resistance.

Obviously the effects are not uniform for all but I've found it helps.

There was no difference for me, I craved sugar a little less but that was it. I know it helps others though x

It really worked for me as was prescribed it o help with fertility. Within three months I had regular periods, lost weight and got pregnant in less than a year so it really helped me. Post pregnancy I went back on it, really focused on diet and exercise and got pregnant a second time and at my scan the person mentioned there were no cysts on my ovaries. During my c-section on my first the doctor commented on many cysts were on my left ovary so over the years I’ve managed to help my PCOS a lot but required metformin, a DF, GF diet plus walking everyday. Good luck and hope it works out for you

I second the Philips IPL machine, I got mine 4 years ago and have used it on and off, I never used it past the first touch up treatments (just laziness lol), however I definitely noticed a difference in terms of speed of regrowth, how much hair grew back etc. In fact 2 years after I stopped using it my legs were still quite patchy in some areas with no hair growing at all.

A few weeks ago I decided I was going to try again and fully commit this time - partly because my facial hair has been awful, I actually think it's the worst it's ever been, despite having lost quite a bit of weight (which I thought would improve it), I was having to pluck the same 2 chin hairs and shave the rest of my chin/neck every day :( and didn't want to have to shell out to get it lasered professionally. I've only done 2 sessions so far and have seen a massive difference - it's growing back much, much slower and there seems to be a lot less hair too! Can't wait to see my results when I only have to do touch ups!

I would definitely give it a try if you can @Shoequeen91!

Thank you so much to those of you that replied, especially as I’d never been on this thread before and just popped up seeking advice. I really appreciate it. I have a Philips IPL, I just find that it doesn’t detect on my chin but maybe I need to just persevere. It been a godsend for other areas (armpits, legs etc) 💖

I started metformin extended release last November and lost 3 stone within 3 months. I did stop eating anything sugary though (biscuits, chocolate, cakes etc) but didn’t up my exercise.

My period also came back within 2 months and has been regular since. So I do highlight recommend, especially the XR as didn’t have any side effect as opposed to with the regular

Did you have to press your doctors into prescribing metformin? I'm really struggling with my weight due to pcos (doesn't help either that I have BPD & ADHD that got missed for so many years it branched into an ED). I've mentioned my weight to them numerous times and all they ever offer me is a discounted slimming world/weight watchers subs or discounted gym membership, and the other GP I saw recommended the 800 calorie diet lol. I seem to drop weight for the first few weeks then as I settle into a routine with it the weight just starts piling back on

So I had a similar experience. I spoke to a doctor about help with my PCOS symptoms such as facial hair and weight etc and she offered me slimming world vouchers. I was really offended as I had just explained that I don’t need educating in nutrition and that I have an issue as weight is harder to lose and I was annoyed that I can’t get help with my facial hair (similar issue as to do with hormones) anyway I put a complaint in about how she dealt with me and then my next app was wirh a partner GP where they prescribed Metformin. The second time I had it prescribed I argued with the GP and he eventually prescribed it to me. Maybe to shut me up 🤣

I have issues with insulin resistance so I would just suggest getting a blood test if you haven’t already

My period is totally kicking my arse today. I have no energy to do anything and have literally lay on the sofa since waking up this morning🫠. I’ve also noticed some changes to my period which aren’t ideal. I now get spotting a few days before and the first day of my period starts with a lot of ‘old’ blood and then is a lot heavier compared to what it used to be. I’ve bled through tampons and filled pads after only a few hours. However days 2, 3 and occasionally when I have a 4th day are back to normal and light like they used to be.

The changes could well be stress related as I am under a lot of stress at work and some in my personal life. I just hate the inconsistency and not knowing how my period is going to be. My cycle also ranges from 30 days to 37 days (since I started recording at the beginning of the year) so it’s a bit hard to know when it’s gonna come or not.

Sometimes I think ‘duck this’ and am so tempted to go back on the pill!

I’m the exact same 😭😭 it’s just the worst!!

Hi all.

new to this thread and just wanted to know your thoughts.

I’ve always struggled with heavy, long and irregular periods. When I came off the pini pill a few years ago my periods were 60/70 days apart and took us ages to conceive.

came off the implant last year and same thing, and iron levels were always dropping due to heavy periods. Also struggled with weight for years and I get facial hair too, like clockwork with my periods. Have mentioned my periods to my GP numerous times and been given iron tablets but no other tests ever been done

In May my GP said I was on the cut off for t2 diabetes, only just so not given any medication. Since then I’ve cut down on carbs, lost some weight and my blood sugar readings are now “normal” but the periods and other symptoms continue (though slightly more regular)

following the diabetes diagnosis I got some private tests done which came back saying “low sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and optimal testosterone levels which can be associated with a range of problems including absent or irregular menstrual periods, weight gain and excess growth of facial and body hair. We recommend that you discuss these results with a doctor.”

having looked into it this could be PCOS which I never knew was associated with insulin resistance. At the appointment I was diagnosed with diabetes I specifically remember saying that I’d just had a horrendous period lasting nearly two weeks and could that have had any impact and the GP replied “no”…that was it.

I’m a bit raging to be honest they’ve never even considered it or looked into it. Does it sound like it could be ?

Sounds very much like PCOS. GPs are useless. I’ve taught myself everything I know about PCOS and IR.
