Paying off debt support

Hi all! I’m a few months after paying my final debt management plan payment 🥳 I had a default listed on my credit score which was causing me issues but saw someone on Reddit say they’d applied to get it removed. Apparently companies can register a default but it’s a bit of a dick move to do so if they know you’re in a debt arrangement scheme. Did it not expecting them to but they removed it! Now no default registered 👏

Has anyone looked at writing a letter of complaint to any of their lenders for irresponsible lending? I sent one to Lloyds as most of my debt was with them. I had a credit card that was maxed out at £4,500 and they then allowed me to take out another credit with the highest limit iv ever had at £11,500 and then 2 weeks later, allowed me to have a £15,000 loan. Since my complaint, they reduced the 4500 card to £4000 and the 11500 card to £1500. I'm still waiting to hear back for the full complaint - they reckon i should here back by the 11th December.

I’ve seen a lot of people have success with this - debtcamel has a template etc and shared stories of positive outcomes on her Instagram. 👏🏽

Does this mean you default on your payments or gives you a bad credit score or anything like that? I’m not sure how this works? Can it only be claimed if you’re in a debt management plan? Thanks 🙏🏼

Nope, you can claim it any time. Have a look on debt camel. She gives templates for writing letters. One woman had £11,500 refunded by Very for irresponsible lending.

Worked out if I continue to pay off £200 pcm on my credit card like I have been, I should have it paid off completely by August 2025.
This time I need to not use it again (except for emergencies) or use a small amount I can pay off easily.
I paid it off before in full & then ended up in the same position where I had loads (for me) on there & it's taken ages to pay off again. But finally seems like there's light at the end of the tunnel 🙌🏽

Does anyone have experiences of getting debts partially written off? I don’t think I can handle another 4 years of DMP 😭

Have you looked at a debt relief order?

Have you looked at reducing your credit limits? To prevent you from spending more?

I'm in a DRO now, but i have open accounts with no spending on there. I have reduced the credit limit by a massive amount to stop me from spending anymore. For example, my next account gave me a £5000 credit limit, I've reduced it to £450. Very gave me a £5050 credit limit, iv reduced it to £1500. One of my credit cards gave me an £11,500 credit limit, I reduced it to £1500.

I have ADHD and was spending for dopamine hits. Moving money to 0% balance transfers thinking yeah no interest, but then that left that previous card with £0 balance, so the temptations came again. Also got rid of Klarna and clearpay and the like as they are addictive & you spend more - because why pay £150 now when I can pay £50 over 3 months, oh its only £50, lets just add more stuff in the basket. Parcels being delivered - yay dopamine. And then its just a downwards spiral of more debt.

This sounds exactly like me - leaving things open so my utilisation looked good…..no no no not anymore. Did similar with Next, didn’t need a 4k limit so put it down to 1250, physically cut up cards of anything that has a zero balance

I didn't even realise you could reduce them, that's a good idea

It's been suggested many times by well meaning people in my life that I may have ADHD 😅 and you've described me to a tee there haha

Are we the same person?! I will enquire about a DRO. ADHD tax hurts.

Be mindful that with a DRO you have to have a max of £75 a month leftover after paying essentials - not including the debts. That includes everything, rent/mortgage, council tax, food, kids haircuts, clothes, xmas & bdays, etc. Car has to be worth less than £4000 too. I did mine through money wellness and it was all done in a couple of days to be honest, I was surprised how quick it was.

Morning.
Has anyone in here who in the middle of paying off your DMP had the repayments rejected? It seems strange that after five months of accepting the money they suddenly decide not to?!
Thank you

Given my income I don't think I can get a DRO. The issue is I've had a bit of a mental breakdown having spent most of my adult life owing at least 5 figures. Even did a DMP before but I didn't learn. Now with my diagnosis I get it, but I'm 1 year down with 4 left to go, and I'm sick of having all my disposable income going onto debts and not being able to have fun, I have NOTHING saved, I don't really go away and I don't think I'll ever be able to buy a house.

Think I've got SAD this winter too so I'm just depressed on top of having a job that's mentally killing me.

I had this, a payment returned. Turned out the debt had been moved to the banks collection/management department so I had to call them and let Stepchange know the new details.

It absolutely does get better! I am at the other end to you and have two payments left to make on a 7 year repayment plan after racking up almost £30k of debt. It's been a really long, hard slog and I have barely any savings - BUT - the debt is almost paid off. It is gutting to see your disposable money being taken up but you are doing really well repaying it ❤

DRO's arent about the incomes, its about the outgoings. If you have nothing left after paying your essentials, then you could be entitled. No harm in having a look on step change and seeing what they would suggest.
