Parents of Toddlers with Autism/Global development delays/Speech Delays

What sort of things do you do with your toddlers during the day to keep them entertained?
Also do you have TV on all day, or just limit it a certain amount each day?
Ok I’m gonna level with you: we have the tv on pretty much constantly at this point 🤦🏻‍♀️ my kid just doesn’t want to do actual play much, imagination is barely there and if they can’t immediately master a task on the first try the explosion happens immediately so I tend to find YouTube or Disney+ an easy win to distract them away from hitting me

How do all your little ones communicate? If they are verbal what age did they start saying words? And are the words they can say always consistent?
My 2 year 9 months daughter now communicates mainly through PECS, she has said around 80 words since March but they aren’t consistent, some words she’ll say often like duck, cheese but most of the words we will hear once maybe twice and then not again.
She has been seeing a private speech therapist since June and has really come on well since then, but it’s still a slow process.

Mine is 2 years 9 months as well. He’s completely non verbal and doesn’t understand how to use pecs, signs or objects of reference. He communicates mainly by taking my hand to whatever he wants.
My18 year old didn’t start talking until he was 6. So it’s a slow process but we are all doing everything we can to support speech and language.

Thanks for your reply, that’s really good to know about your older son talking late will give a lot of people hope.

Hi everyone, I am glad I have found this thread. I was part of another one on here too which was helpful!
My son has just turned 3, he is classed as non verbal but can say lots of single words, he just doesn’t have the language skills to communicate or understand yet. I really hope it comes soon. We have been on SLT waiting list since Jan, waiting to find out if we have been accepted for DLA as we will pay for SLT with that if we get it.
He is also a gestalt language processor. We also have a 10 month old that he’s only just started adknowledging in the last month or two. Xx

Hi there, your son sounds similar to my daughter who will be 3 in December, lots of words although almost are inconsistent but no proper verbal communication yet and I think she might be a gestalt language processor. I have a 9 month baby who she doesn’t take much notice of, although will cuddle or stroke her head if I ask her to so I’m hoping more of a bond will come soon.
I use her DLA for speech therapy, which she’s been having since June and which we find is really helping.

How is everyone doing?
As the months go on do you feel like things are getting a bit easier or a bit harder?

Weirdly I’d say nothing has changed and things are the same. How about you?
Appointments are starting to slowly filter through, we’ve had s&l, specialist play and 3 abortive hearing tests- next step is sedation which I’m not sold on since imo he can hear and it would just cause distress.

Harder. Today I’ve been beaten repeatedly because they broke something and now I must pay for it. I’m so tired

We also have a hearing test under sedation in a couple of weeks. He’s had 4 hearing tests and he loses interest really quickly so this is the next step to just confirm he can hear I guess. Hope all goes well with yours x

We are in exactly the same position. If you don’t mind letting me know how the sedation goes I’d really appreciate it.

Yes of course I will. He’s 14.3kg so on the higher end as the max weight limit is 15kg apparently so I’ve been warned it might not work. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly 🫶🏻

my 2 year old has started waking up in the middle of the night again (for hours a night) i have to get up and go to work in the morning and i've just found out i'm pregnant so feeling extra tired 😂 any one else's kids suffering with sleep problems? what do you do?

Melotonin is a wonder 😂

Melatonin is hit or miss. Some kids it works wonders others not so much. It made my sons sleep worse, he’d wake up screaming and was a lot more irritable in the day. It also gave him extremely painful restless legs.

Hi, we had our appt yesterday. The sedation worked, but unfortunately not enough to send him to sleep. He was fighting it massively and kept trying to get off the bed.
I hope your experience is better! X

Thank you for updating me. We don’t have a date yet but are told some time in February.
I’m sorry you didn’t have a good experience, have they said what the next step is?
When they get upset it makes me question if it is worth it, unless you have concerns about his hearing of course.

The senior audiologist has said she will suggest a joint meeting with herself and the consultant and whilst we are there she will try and do a normal hearing test again. Yeah, I think he can hear. But because they have said numerous times he isn’t responding to low or medium pitch sounds, it’s making me wonder. But then I think it’s because he loses interest. He constantly has glue ear too, just wish they would give him grommets!
good luck for when your time comes xx

Anyone else’s toddler non verbal but doesn’t shut up?😂 all these different sounds/words without meaning constantly! I just wish they were proper words but I’m keeping my fingers crossed as she’s only just turned 2🤞🏻
