You aren’t. I wrote this responding to you on the things everyone likes thread but it seemed to book based so it’s convenient you have posted here and I can use that same response ...I must be the only person in the world who didn’t like the book....and thinks the tv show is okay? Connell is GREAT. But the rest? It seems kind of like what I’d have loved age 17. I don’t know. I’m usually a big fan of slow stories but I just don’t get the huge hype.
Oh my god you are literally the first person I’ve heard say that about the series , thank god! Though I should step back because I liked the book, I thought it was pretty good. Not the best book I’ve ever read but certainly an 8/10.
Before the series was released I had two main concerns. The first was that it would simply be bad, like many weak adaptations of good books. The second was I couldn’t see the benefit of turning it into a tv series, artistically anyway. It’s about thoughts, feelings , social interactions on a minute scale.
Even though they did do it well in the end, impressive as very difficult to convey that stuff, meaning concern 1 was wrong, it still doesn’t seem better than what could be done in the book. Or if not better than not providing any kind of new way of seeing the story. It basically felt like I was reading the book at times.
The acting was very impressive though especially from him. And she’s not even Irish so also impressive.
So it was good but I still don’t think it needed to be made. The way people are responding- not just here but my friends, in the media etc has made me feel a bit confused. I would like to know what it was like to watch without having read then book though. I think that might make me enjoy it more, because it’s stil complex and nuanced for a tv show.
