One of regular (but enjoyable) threads about 70s and 80s food has had its also regular (and tedious) posts about how much thinner everyone was back then because food was so much better. It’s like the thin police can’t bear people having fun.

People also forget that skinny in the 70’s and 80’s was brought to you by amphetamines and nicotine.

Diet was less relevant.

Thought you'd all want to rush out to buy this dress that Natasha Dancing has suggested a poster wears to meet her DH work colleagues....

The model looks like she wishes someone would shoot her directly through the brain.

I was a child in the 70s and a teen/young adult in the 80s. Yes we had loads of healthy and homegrown food. My dad was a keen gardener and a fantastic cook but we also had Vesta chow mein, crispy pancakes, deep fried everything, pot noodles when those were invented, Fray bentos etc.

My mum was always on diets and I started dieting really young (1000 cals a day, Slimming Magazine Club) to try and get to a weight that my body was never designed to reach thus setting me up for a lifetime of yo-yo diets and disordered eating. Looking back at photos I was a slinky babe who didn't need to go near a slimming club or live on Lean Cuisine ready meals and air.

It was not a halcyon time of wall to wall teeny tinies, people have always struggled with their weight.

Here endeth my rant.
Birds Eye cod balls, meat and taty pie (also known as hunt the meat pie) in suet crust. Actual proper puddings with every dinner, filling up on bread and jam … although I did get loads of exercise. We used to walk to and from school 4 times a day (home for dinner) and just that was a good 4 miles a day. My mum is a true teeny tiny, under 5 foot, 6 stone wet through, who could - and did - eat anything so food was always just there. Also, money was a bit tight - in the 70’s dad was on a 3 day week and mum only had a ‘little’ job so it Was mainly allotment veg and a skerrick of meat. And bread and jam.

Imagine being those colleagues and your mates wife rocks up wearing that. And asking him "So your wife, she's a TV presenter for pre-school or something?"

If I were able to post, I’d be saying “I don’t know, I’ve never worn glasses”. 😂

(I do - and IME £500 is normal).
Need to get yourself to an Asda opticians, 2 pairs for between £120 and £220! Or glasses direct on t’internet.

Exactly! I have single vision glasses and wear contact lenses so get a 50% discount on glasses. This means I only pay about £100 a pair, or less if I don't get "designer" frames.

My husband needs varifocals so a single pair costs over £500
He needs to get to an Asda optician too as they will include varifocals for the same price as normal lenses if prescription needs it.
BTW am not on commission 😆

The only occasion I could fit into a size small.

Absolutely not with my script (and I have proper eye problems). I do however buy glasses direct for spares so I can swim in the sea and give zero fucks if I lose them. My glasses are worn every minute I’m awake and on my face daily - I ain’t doing cheap!

If I wore that anywhere, I would expect to be told how ingenious it was of me it was to make an emergency dress for myself from curtains, following my tragic Dwardrobe fire after the shops shut.
And 300 quid? You can duck that sky high!

I think people were generally thinner then because they had to walk everywhere, car ownership wasn't like today- also many people did two jobs, pulling pints on the evening etc to top up their money. The food was full of fat! Stews with a huge lump of solid fat on the top of the pan, out of the fridge, etc. Bread or toast and dripping etc. Sausages thrown into the lard in the chip pan to cook them....... you had slim people of 35- 50 dropping dead back then because of unhealthy living.... add in not many houses having central heating ( usually gas fires and paraffin heaters) and most people drank quite heavily as well. It wasn't unusual for men to swig 6 cans of beer each night when in from work. All from memory! 😆

I still make pies with a suet pastry 😋

Fully agree on your point of people very likely needing to walk a lot more and generally being a lot more active daily. Many had frankly atrocious diets. Portion sizes today are much bigger than they were 100 years ago, that's a proven fact, but people these days also are taller, and don't tend to die in huge numbers in infancy and live longer than ever. i seriously doubt that the 70s diet of alcohol, suet and nicotine was a health booster.

Does anyone remember that diet in the 70s which was pretty much boiled eggs, black coffee and wine? (I wasn’t alive in the 70s but read my mums vogue book). It’s weird as I grew up in a household that constantly had biscuits/cakes/crisps on the shopping list yet now I wouldn’t thank you for them!

Also as an aside… there’s a reason nobody allows noddy to drink wine 🤢

Oh yuck, I wasn't alive back that but that sounded so revolting I had to google it: https://www.thekitchn.com/wine-egg-diet-helen-gurley-brown-262223
Some mad woman tried this and I think my stomach now hates me for reading this.

I think I remember reading somewhere it takes the body more calories to digest a boiled egg than what's in one , so you get the vitamins and minerals but no calories?

When I started work , everybody was three sheets to the wind in the afternoons once they got back from lunch , our canteen had a bar up one end!
