maybe she isn’t as close to her dad as she’s let on?
I so agree. Why do we think she’s close to her dad? I find it odd that she is given what we know of her upbringing. To me the association is often brought up because he is the easiest connection to some form of money, and I just feel she talks about him or raises him in an awkward way always to plant another point eg about “let me tell you about the flats my family own”. What has that got to do with anything?? And your family? Your father has remarried, the flats are in his Company’s name if they are at all. Lydia is not a director of that company I’m sure because nobody would be stupid enough to appoint a bimbo daft enough to go up to tenants to say what she said as a officer of a company. If he owns it he would also have a property manager who will not stand for
bleeping stupid behaviour like that, which is why the story doesn’t even compute for me.
She often likes to name drop items or status related things, and somehow I think her putting this out there is a way for her to show people she’s of a decent class. She is not. To me her father may have some meaning to her but the mention of him is always done in a way that uses him as a prop or means to further her pretension of grandeur.
She thinks money equals class (I’m talking about the British class system). That alone tells you how she is NOT from some upper crust background. It is not uncommon for the landed titled gentry to not have liquid wealth anymore. They have LAND, titles, connections, obligations, maybe sticks up their arses that come with a lot of other little things money can’t buy - none of which Lydia has even a hint of. Most of them have plenty connections, and with that come things like a brand name education and an awareness of British society she far from possesses.
She can pretend all she wants; her younger non Brit audience can believe what they wish but anyone who knows an iota about the classism of British society knows her accent is off, her background is far from what she weirdly aspires to, and nothing she acquires can or will ever change that.

Me too. Which makes me think the ASA guidelines are a little unclear. Actually, I’m not totally surprised as I think Ali’s posts were way and tenuous as regards the guidelines. Lydia had hers altered a little so they wouldn’t bite as much… But anyway, whatever.
