it was a non refundable security deposit and they lost it
they were going to pay it back monthly but then the whole noncey thing came out and they stopped talking to her and they haven’t paid it back

Seems an awful lot for a deposit, working it out means that the rent could not have been realistically afforded anyway considering the position they are both in. I'd say the deposit was smaller than they are saying and the rest was spent on their many trips travelling around and of course that boring as duck holiday.
