You put it so well. I’ve mentioned my cousin on here before who reminds me of Jack in so many ways with her compulsive lying. But this is what she does as part of her self-mythologising. She takes her parents' experiences and makes out like they're her own. Everything from Big Dave and the picket lines to the fostering to the working class backgrounds and the small house they started out in (which Jack must have spent perhaps the first couple of years of her life in?), even her brother and the whole 'army around the edges' schtick. And also the whole running around the hills with the goats under the lemon trees in Cyprus or whatever her vision of her grandpa's childhood was like. She pilfers people's lives and pretends like she's the one living it. Get your own life, Jack!
she does exactly what you describe in the BiB, which was fairly reminiscent of some parts of my childhood when I went to visit my grandparents in Greece. They lived in a very small village, everyone was ancient and the ones who were my age were my cousins. They couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak Greek so I used to go to my grandparents field with my yiayia to pick veg and olives and stroke the donkey. I longed for a trip to Butlins.
my cousin has appropriated this type of scenario for herself even though she’s on my maternal side and it’s my dad who is Greek. She tells people she’s half Greek and it’s so cringe for a woman who’s almost 30. Her and Jack would get on like a house on fire.
