She’s such a strong intelligent woman from what I’ve seen, so far she hasn’t backed down so hopefully she continues to stick to her guns.

I know I couldn’t cope with it if I was on the receiving end of the horrific abuse she’s getting. She laid bare about her previous experiences of abuse etc and all people could do was attack her. And the thing is, most people in the public eye will be too scared to step out and voice their support for her out of fear of being ‘cancelled’. Honestly I hate social media, twitter more than anything. It just amplified everything, a few years ago this would never have been the massive issue that people have made it out to be.

I understand that these days if you voice an opinion then there will be thousands willing to tell you their differing opinion. Which is good as part of a healthy debate, but the attacks on JK have been absolutely sickening.

I hate twitter, too, especially these past few years. There are a lot of violent neo-Nazis and white nationalists on there, the real kind not the edgy teens kind, and no one cares. Plus, only recently has twitter started actively removing their accounts, which I find so extremely hypocritical as like with Fakebook, they are aware this demonic content exists on their platform for years but refuse to deal with it until it becomes dangerous.

I used to report them when I saw on twitter and they would stay up, no matter how extremist or violent. I stopped going there because I was sick of running across accounts with people talking about apartheid and forcibly building separate ethnostates, advocating for lynchings in the US again and harassing mixed race people or couples in multicultural/interracial marriages. Instagram is starting to get like that, too, but with twitter it is just more prevalent for whatever reason.

I think a lot of stuff would simmer down if people stopped treating Twitter like a real place, as opposed to a playground for bots, edgelords and bigots.

Also, the young ‘uns are a bit inexperienced to realise that the more crazy left they go, there is generally a commensurate slide in the opposite direction elsewhere, whether because people think their views are being challenged or they just want to troll for the lols.

However, I am trying to work out if there is a particular reason it’s only the Benjis of the world that seem to feature as representatives from that side of the debate:

1. There are genuinely so few trans people willing to stick their head above the parapet, whether because they value their privacy or otherwise, journalists and news programmes take any old nutter.

2. News sources and the like find the most inappropriate and potentially offensive person to represent that side of the argument to play to their viewers’ preconceptions (i.e. that identity stuff is middle class decadence) or bias. In the same way that back post 9/11 Fox News always seemed to find the “death to America” candidate to portray the “average Muslim”.

If no. 2 is the case, perhaps TRAs need to turn their ire to well-meaning ”allies” and the posh white cismen electing themselves their spokemen as they are hurting their cause and confirming all the negative stereotypes of their movement to the general public.

First time poster on the JK threads. Was intrigued she had a thread so came on to see what the consensus was, as I personally felt it had all gone a bit too far and woke and she couldn’t breathe without being called transphobic.

Seeing all the backlash to the new novel is just bizarre when, even as a millennial myself, I have watched countless numbers of these storylines play out on mainstream tv. Yet she gets a hard time for it!! All very strange. I’ll never really wrap my head around woke-ness (and I’m in my mid 20s).

Just came across this. I don’t recall JK ever saying that trans women weren’t women and trans men weren’t men.

I always think of it this way - I’m not a millionaire but I want to be. I feel like I’m in the wrong life and I’m not happy living payday to payday, so I start living as a millionaire. I do things that I think a millionaire would do, I buy things that a millionaire would buy. I tell everyone that I am a millionaire. Does that make me an actual millionaire? No it doesn’t.

It may be a very reductive analogy but the principles are the same.

The vitriolic turn against JK Rowling is all the more shocking when you consider that for years and years she has been worshipped by many as a leader of social justice, lauded for her charitable donations and charity work. The same people that claimed her as a woke Queen have now denounced her forever and are sending her death threats.

Obviosuly no one learned anything after Caroline Flack 😕
The very people who are doing this are the people who bleat about any tiny thing they disagree with causing damage to their mental health. Yet they are willing to issue death threats against a woman and burn her books, nazi style. The trouble with people who think they are fighting for utopia is that anything is then justifiable in pursuit of their version of the ideal world.

Exactly, to them the end justifies the means.
The biggest TRA I know irl is a Marxist

I'm gonna order the book now 😁

Where was the outcry about villains in previous books? Oh yes straight white males (particularly poshos) have no right to be offended because its fine too blame them for everything.

Ive read the book.....and there isnt a trans character in the book. There is a convicted murderer called Dennis Creed, who deliberately used to put on a womans coat and wig to reassure women he was trying to entrap, but I dont think he ever identified as female, just played dress up to fool people.

Her books are very good at describing how vulnerable woman can feel....in all kinds of different situations, and how people can pull on all kind of emotional heartstrings to influence and tug at others emotions.

I think its a clever and good book and would definitely recommend reading it.......if you like violent/psychotic murder mysteries!

It's always women who get the backlash. Always. Men are allowed to tell us what women are but women are not permitted to do so. You couldn't make it up

And there is a quote from Simone de Beauvoir in the book...that says exactly that!

"When women act like women, they are accused of being inferior. When women act like human beings, they are accused of behaving like men." ~ Simone de Beauvoir

The poor woman will never be able to do anything right ever again. I hope she’s strong enough to take it.

Isnt that what George Bernard Shaw used to do? I remember studing Pygmalion (adapted into the film My Fair Lady) changing how words are written to get the sounds the way he wanted to hear them!

The way accents are written is ......unusual......but, it did give me the sense of an irish accent, a cockney accent etc....

Have mentioned this on here before but if anyone wants to email JK Rowling words of support, many of us across the internet have, and we’ve all had lovely and prompt replies from her team.

She has mentioned more than once that she is aware of and reads the emails of support she is being sent in reference to this issue, so I do believe it has an impact.

The email address to reach her is: [email protected]

You won’t get a reply from the woman herself but all positive emails seem to be acknowledged and passed on to her. It’s a nice thing to do, I think.
