Yep I was going to say the same! With even a small bit of research, you can find that there's no scientific evidence that consuming placenta in any form has health benefits and as you said, actually can be potentially harmful. Even after preparation, the pills can be infected with bacteria and viruses that were in the placenta that can then be passed to the baby through breastmilk. The reported benefits are, in my mind, all just a placebo effect. It's also unregulated.

We were discussing this just in general today at work, a group of 6/7 woman, both mothers and not mothers, and we all said the same thing, it’s a bloody joke! Preying on women who think that they’re getting all these amazing health benefits when they’re running the risk of unknown side effects. A normal multivitamin would do the same if not more than these capsules. The cost of it alone outside of cork is crazy, babies are expensive enough without paying a minimum of €240 for a glorified iron tablet 🙄

100000% all of this. That’s exactly what it is and like I said-these insta huns/mums do it because they get it for free or it’s the ‘new thing to do’ and ppl following get it into their head it’s beneficial.

Exactly! Essentially all of the nutritional value found in placenta can be achieved with a balanced diet and/or proper supplements. The claims about curing anxiety and everything honestly really upsets me to be honest, because postpartum is already such a vulnerable time physically and emotionally. Mothers take them believing it'll cure them of baby blues and do certain things for them, when it's really not doing anything or could potentially cause more harm than good.

Unfortunately this placenta business is a newish fad that the insta mums have done and ppl think it automatically is a good thing. Your paying someone who is not qualified to do anything medically a fortune to dry out your placenta in a dirty, not regulated, sink and make it look legit. I wish ppl would wake up and see the risks

And where's the proof that it's even all your own placenta you're getting back?! I mean, I'm sure it probably is, but as someone else mentioned already, it's unregulated! Disappointed to see Aine mentioning this too.

I actually didn’t say this because it makes me feel nauseous even thinking about it🤢 could you imagine injesting another persons placenta🤢 I thought she was going to talk about it more maybe she got some negative feedback

It doesn't bear thinking about, does it?

I hope she will come on and clarify that it's not recommended by health professionals, but that she has chosen to do it anyway, and encourages others to do their own research and ask their own doctors if interested.

With Aine being so careful of her health with having Type 1 diabetes I would have thought this would be the last thing she'd do.

Ah, no. Aine's going to eat her placenta. There's no evidence basis for any claims of benefits from the people who make money out of prepping the placentas, and there's a possible risk of infection. And for some women it has actually reduced their breast milk supply.

I hope this isn't the start of a descent into woo woo land.
Dr Sarah J Murphy just said on her stories that there’s so benefit to it. I wonder does Aine follow her

Going through my own Infertility/IVF journey, and I've been genuinely delighted for Aine. But the complaining about staying on progesterone another few weeks and complaining about the nausea is starting to put me off. Some of us would give anything to be in her position. Now I'm not saying she should suck it up and not talk about things that annoy her, but maybe not on a platform where so many follow her cos we're on the same path ? I know she isn't exactly an IVF account, it's her personal account. But I'm going to have to unfollow. Maybe I'm just at a supe sensitive stage in my journey 🤷🏼‍♀️

I just hit mute once they get pregnant. It’s probably a mix of being sensitive if you’re still on the journey and also maybe she’s just caught up in everything but I think following the pregnancy can be very triggering.

I do know what you mean. Have you had any IVF friends succeed and complain?
I have and some I had to break away from but one I was very close to I could tolerate and now she has PND and struggling
No, don't have any friends who've been through it. That's why I've found such great support from online accounts. Haven't told many close friends or family yet either x

Feel her pain, I was on progesterone until 16 weeks too and it’s horrible stuff. Pregnancy can be hard no matter how longed for it is. She shares all the details of her journey in detail, the good and the bad so I’m not surprised she isn’t sugar coating it. At the end of the day it’s her personal page and this is her experience. Will she not be allowed to say if she finds being a new parent hard too because she should just be grateful.
