IBS/IBD sufferers...

this was my original post with my symptoms.
New Reader Here... I've just been sent home from work this afternoon, as I have had sickness and diarrhoea - whilst this is happening I'm sweating profously and feel like as if I'm going to pass out... i have excruciating pain in my stomach just below my ribs... once the sickness and diarrhoea has stopped I need to lay on a cold floor to calm down... after a few hours I feel pretty normal - this has happened 4/5 times now - and Drs always put it down to Gastroenteritis!? Helppp!!! 😪

I’ve been tested via bloods and stool samples for a Crohns, Coeliac and inflammatory issues (this was quite a while ago now) - these episodes I experience typically happen every few months and I go back to the Dr but he sits there rather dumbfounded! 😂 Believe it’s may be an allergy, as it’s as if my body is going into shock… but unable to find the trigger as like I’ve previously said I could eat for instance pesto pasta for months and then on one occasion straight after eating it can cause an episode.

edited to add: all results have come back normal!

I have the same thing with sweating and dizziness when I have a Crohn's flare .

Has the Dr referred you for a colonoscopy? It may be that you have something like diverticular disease.

The foodstuffs being fine then turning on you is quite common imo.
My big problem is bread of any sort which is frustrating as I love it. Your symptoms with the pain, diarrhoea and nausea sound horribly familiar (I'm diagnosed IBS).
I've avoided bread for months (had been fine for ages before that but then it had all kicked in again). Anyway two days ago I had caesar salad with a few croutons. And ate them thinking they wouldn't harm but omg. Basically a day in bed clutching my stomach. I felt so stupid. Oh and I can't eat pasta now either 😞 But portion size in anything is also a trigger - have to have quite small meals.

Im going to look at FODMap in more detail - someone I work with has also suggested Paelo!? I love bread and pasta too! 🤪 Pasta is my favourite meal ever! 😩
---
Other issues could be Gallstones or Bile Malabsorbtion.

I have had my gallbladder removed - a good 12 years ago, as this is typically the first thing the Dr thinks it is - Will look into the Bile Malabsorption. Thankyou! 🙂

No, regardless of the blood tests, stool samples and symptoms still happening, this has not been offered to me. 😕

That's interesting, that was the first thing I got an appointment for even before all my blood tests and samples.

If it's an allergy it might be worthwhile keeping a food diary and tracking your symptoms, see if anything triggers it. I had gastroenteritis and that triggered my Crohn's. Only thing that helped was going vegan, no way I was going to have chemo to treat it.

Aldi do a chickpea pasta which is low fodmap and it's tasty. Bread stick to sourdough. The proper stuff though. Try get some good bacteria in might be an in balance. Aldi do plain kefir which is good too if you are ok with dairy.

You need to specifically ask to be referred to a gastro doctor and request a colonoscopy. If they refuse tell them you want them to write down on your notes "refusing ongoing care to patient" - they do not like this and will refferal you.
Unfortunately within the world of crohns/uc you have to fight for ongoing tests, people wait years and then it gets to a crisis point where you're being admitted.
Don't take no for an answer. It's hard to advocate for yourself but you've got to. Do you have a family member or friend that can come with you? Sometimes it's easier if you've got someone in your corner.

Having GB removed can cause your body to not regulate the bile being produced/used when you eat fattier foods, which if you're not absorbing it properly would IBD like symptoms at times

I’m jumping back on here to see if anyone has any ideas or has experienced this!!

So last year I had a colonoscopy for the symptoms I am about to mention below - everything came back clear. Stool test also clear. Blood tests clear.

But I’m having another flare up of getting very little warning of needing the toilet. I don’t get any tummy pains or cramps, it’s just like “oh I need the toilet” and I have seconds to get there.

My bowel movements on days like this are very acidy and it stings. And it’s almost like I dribble out poo. SO SORRY TMI. I’m really sorry!!! I never feel fully empty or satisfied because within the hour, I need to go again and it’s only little tiny dribbles of loose movement.

What on earth could this be?!

I tend to get flare ups where I’ll suffer like this for a few weeks and then it goes away totally. No diet changes or anything.

Did you have your small bowel checked?

I get something like this but it’s a bit more violent than a dribble! No cramps, nothing detected by tests. With me I now think it is pure anxiety so I wonder if you’re under stress at the moment?

Sorry to hear that @swimming.

Have you noticed if your poo is an usual colour or texture, aside from being watery? Anything greasy, pale, hard to flush or an unusual colour like orange or green could suggest bile acid malabsorption. That has similar symptoms to what you described and can be triggered by a high fat diet or eating a lot of acidic foods, things like citrus and tomato sauce.

Alternatively it may be IBS-D and the acidic feeling you're getting may just be from frequent loo visits.

I just googled the bike acid malabsorption and it does sound exactly like my issues!

Why would the doctor last year who did my colonoscopy not mention this to me? And the special test they can do it diagnose is?! NHS costing probably!

I’ve got another GP appointment next week to raise the issue with them again because it’s just getting silly. I have to wear pads daily now as my bum area constantly feels wet and I’m worried I am leaking poo.

(again I’m sorry to anyone eating right now ha ha)

I have proctitis so know exactly how you feel. I hope your appointment goes well and you get some answers.

This is the test - https://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/health-information/sehcat-study

You take a radioactive tablet, come back in a couple of hours for a scan, then go back a week later for another scan. The test basically check to see if the bile is being absorbed by the terminal illium (end of the small bowl) or of it's being let into the large bowel. The large bowel is not designed to have the bile in it, so it will evacuate the large bowel ASAP, which is why you'll have partly undigested food in the poop, because the large bowel isn't having enough time to absorb the water etc from the food.

In the meantime, try eating very low fat food to see if that helps easy the speed of digestive transit. Good luck!

That’s really interesting, thank you. I’ll mention this to the doctor in a couple of weeks.

So after another flare up - I saw a Dr and he is suggesting IBS!? I’ve been put on peppermint capsules and Mebeverine which I’m to try for 3 mths! I’m to look at FODMAP but he thinks it’s more a psychological issue causing the IBS so has referred for CBT. I need to have my bloods done as he wants to check again for Coeliac - I’ve also got to have my ovaries looked at and my thyroid checked. 🤪

At least they're not ruling anything out. Think I had that Coeliac test half a dozen times in the end 😂 Hopefully the meds will help, if not the tests will hopefully either diagnose something or rule out something.

Have they done a stool sample?

Has anyone here seen a nutritionist? And if so did it help?
For over a month I've been so strict about what I eat and it has helped massively. No flare ups. But it is very restrictive and a lot of the time I'm hungry. As quantity seems a trigger as well.
Just today I stupidly had a couple of Hovis wheat crackers and am in trouble again.
I've just sort of lost track of what I can and can't eat now and am consequently a bit scared of so many foods. It seems I'm muddling along just living on the same extremely small food groups. And I'm quite scared it could turn into something else if you see what I mean eating disorder.

I saw a dietician during one admission but the only advice was elimination and Fodmap. And Fortisip/ liquid diet for when I’m really unwell.
