since it’s the first hearing after he was charged, it’ll be an initial heating where he’ll be asked to enter his first plea and could potentially be remanded. Whether he pleads guilty or not, it’s likely to be referred to crown court for the next stage. Magistrates don’t generally deal with s*x offences because of limitations on sentencing.

If he pleads guilty at the first instance, he automatically gets a third deducted from any sentence that’s passed.

There may then be a second, official plea hearing at crown court followed by either a trial or sentencing. If he pleads guilty and goes straight to sentencing, then the judge is likely to ask for a pre-sentence report assessing current and future risk. Given the mental health angle that’s already been played, a psychiatric report may be ordered too before sentencing can happen.

*edited to add* even if he gets the harshest possible sentence, he WON’T be on the SO register for life. The length of time someone stays on the register varies depending on the offence and the length of sentence. It’ll be a few years at most. The offences will stay on his record though (assuming he’s not acquitted) and he will be barred from working with children or vulnerable people.

That age gap alone sparks questions! How can you feel sorry for married old man that’s interested in men that could be his grandchildren’s age??

There are either a lot of very naïve people or ulterior motives to explain the number of people coming out with the #bekind BS.

Of course someone is going to be stressed when faced with allegations as Edwards had been and it is not and should not be viewed as some sort of “sick shield” or “stress shield” to stop any processes into misconduct from proceeding. People who thought it should were very silly in my view. I told a few people on Twitter this at the time.

I’ve thought this too. He’s got an uphill battle though to pull that trick wih the courts. If he’s gong to try the whole unfit to plead routine, they don’t just accept any old bollocks report. Would I be surprised if he tries it though? No!

The BBC use a private company ( Capita, also the bastards who deny disabled people benefits) to try and enforce licences. So they're not likely to have access to who's logging onto Iplayer.
They also rely a lot on threatening letters but hardly ever send anyone out. I don't think I ever had anyone come round despite letters every single month for over 20 years!

I did get a letter on my tv licence renewal date recently asking me to register for a digital licence and I though no, not a chance. But I will have a look at do we actually watch live tv in our household as it is usually just amazon or netflix these days since BBC have sold off all their sport. They even sold off the Open which is the most prestigious British golf tournament so I know of older people who always loved who couldn’t watch it the past couple of years. They are taking the piss with the compulsory nature and the fines for poor people. Linekar and Stephen Nolan are both dreadful and two of the highest paid.

I agree with you both but I think it was more the fact that he did do a great job that day on what was a very long reporting schedule. That doesn’t excuse him being a n though if he is found guilty
 
I've not had a telly licence for a few years. I had one visit, about 3 months after my last licence expired, where my dog gave me away so I answered the door cos it was obvious I was in. Told the Capita lads I was perfectly aware I didn't have a licence, it was deliberate cos I didn't need one and I'd let them know if that ever changes. Since then I've had flurries of letters in varying tones of threat. If any other organisation sent out letters like that they'd be up in court for threats and extortion. They can duck off. They seem to assume I should contact them to re-confirm I don't watch telly and give them my name and email address or phone number. Yeah, that'll be a no, they're not entitled to that info.

To be 100% legal, just unplug the aerial from the back of the telly and log out of iplayer. It's fine to watch ITV, Ch4 and Ch5's on demand stuff, just not the channels' live streams.

I used to love the BBC but I can't support it any more.
 
I’ve not had a tv licence for about 8 years had letters but no visits. Read do not let tv licence people in your house and do not engage with them. I don’t use my aerial (have virgin) on the odd occasion I wanted to watch iplayer I signed up with Buckingham palace as my address and nothing happened (sorry Camila if you got a letter watching bbc live stream 🤣)

Can you just close the door on them though. Sorry I know someone I think posted it previously but what was the link to a letter or email that you send to them to say you no longer need one?
