How much have you spent today? #4

I really need to get into this as my spending is out of control currently:oops: I really need to try and get it under control

Welcome! Everyone has v different reasons for being here but I personally found reading about conscious consumerism a real turning point for how I spent money (and cutting out emotional spending) - there are lots of interesting articles in the top 5 results if you Google it!

Over consumption and coooonstant spending/updating has gone into overdrive in the last few years with social media and influencer content so it’s not surprising so many ppl get stuck in that cycle. Deinfluencing content is becoming popular on tiktok so hopefully this becomes a more popular thing for everyone! 💪🏻

Thank you, I'm definitely going to have a look into that later:) I have started trying to buy less things such as clothes/shoes etc, and when I do buy any I've been buying better quality decent ones rather than frequently buying lower quality and replacing more often. I'm definitely an emotional/boredom spender but really want to start saving more money

Start small grow tall.

Start with a goal. How much money do you want to save and what for?

Split it into long term and short term.

I personally really like monzo because you can have lots of different pots and save for things you'd be buying anyway.

For the long term accounts it helps if you don't have easy access to the money. I saved £25 a month for 10 years with Scottish Friendly and only signed up at 18 because they were offering a free M&S giftcard. It still added up to something when it was finished.

Get a spending book too. Could be done in a diary as well. Writing down your spends will help you become more aware and find out what your triggers are. Most banks have spending insights for their accounts.

You can also sign up for save the change where your payments are rounded up and saved automatically in a separate account.

Expecting yourself to completely not spend is also unrealistic. My sister started off with taking £25 out every time she was paid just for spending. It's now at £100 a month no questions asked for her. She doesn't always even spend the full amount and it gets rolled over.

Amazon yesterday:

£21 two books for my sister and a photo album. I had a free £5 voucher from them for listening to a podcast. I put it on and muted it. I had picked a random "where are you going" one that was awful where she literally just asked strangers in Brighton where they were going.

Today:

Just Lidl. Not sure of the exact amount but it was under £15.
