This is why the then Prince Charles waited until his grandmother died to marry Camilla. The Queen Mum didn’t want to retire to a quiet life after the King died and there are authors who believe she deliberately mollycoddled Charles to ensure she had the ear of the future monarch. I know his parents were away with royal duties but QM didn’t do this with any of her other grandchildren. Winston Churchill, when he was Prime Minister would get annoyed with King George VI when he would ask for instructions and KG VI would say I will have to think this over as he knew what it really meant was I’ll have to ask my wife what she thinks.Pretty sure it was granny - ie the Queen Mother who didn't think Camilla was good enough for Charles - she had a long history of trying to matchmake "spectacular" aristocratic matches with her confidante Baroness Fermoy (Diana's grandmother). I remember reading that the engagement announcement between Andrew Parker Bowles and Camilla Shand was sent into the newspapers to force their hand and the engagement before Andrew PB had even proposed.
It was eerily reminiscent of her involvement in matchmaking with Lady Fermoy to break up Earl Spencer with his then fiancee (she was not good enough) where Lady Fermoy removed her 15 year old daughter Frances Roche from school to throw her into the path of the wealthy, but much older "bachelor of the year" - Johnny Spencer - they married when Johnny was 30 and Frances was 18. Diana Spencer was their 4th child.
Oh and edited to add under things I never knew but makes be think that the Queen Mother deliberately acted to separate Charles and Camilla - Andrew Parker Bowles is in fact a cousin of the Bowes Lyon family - the QM's family.
