Hello lovely Tattlers
I missed the closing of the last thread - thank you for the new one, and the title, by the way! Had taken mum out for some frugal shopping, then on to a lifestyle exhibition for a bit of business research, had another round of allergic reactions and finally got some medication-induced sleep. Taking the day off tomorrow to get my swollen cornea checked out. Way to waste a rare day off
Since this event is curated by the wife of a celebrity, it usually garners a fair bit of attention. Although exhibitors have been telling us how there's not been much footfall the last couple of years - there's competition from other exhibitions (there are tonnes every day and especially every weekend), saturation, people here mostly want to buy only clothes and accessories, most artists don't carry original products they've made or even designed themselves, and most of all, people now know that her husband would most likely not visit the event (at least not in "celebrity mode").
Even with this and the eye-watering prices of the stalls (two-three brands were crammed into each tiny one so they could afford to exhibit by sharing), she gets a lotttt of interest from exhibitors. I'd also do it if I found someone nice to share with
The organiser is not just the wife of the celebrity, but also belongs to a fairly well-to-do family with connections, and established her brand before the lockdowns and well before the concept took off in my city in a big way - we used to have loads of lifestyle exhibitions, but nothing "star-studded" or so heavily marketed.
All of this is to wonder how broken Smegsy's brain has to be to think that she can compete in the market she has apparently chosen, especially when she is so unwilling to put in real work. Not saying that anyone new is doomed to failure, but what does she have - apart from a title bestowed by her in-laws - that sets her or her products apart? She's not quirky or elegant or even well-travelled and interesting enough, and neither are the products she's selected to sell. Her brand is toxic, notorious at best.
When I'd started selling my artwork, and especially my candles, I tried to market them as luxury products, until I realised that "luxury" products require far more in terms of marketing and "extras" like packaging than I could afford, but more importantly, that I don't have the sort of grooming that is required to convince "that set" that I'd know anything about luxury lifestyle products. My lived experience is severely lacking, and it shows
It's the same problem with Smegs. No doubt she's had far more life experience, has travelled a fair bit (not on the level of most celebrities and others with money, but more than the average Joe), and has lived in (apparently) great luxury, but she has also ruined her own image and brand with her Tales of Woe. The people with means might enjoy a good rags to riches story, but they wouldn't want to purchase "lifestyle" products from Smegs - if they did, it would be as "supporting that poor dear" (I hope that makes sense!).
She's markled herself.
