I think older contestants also make the mistake of going too traditional which means it has to be perfect as it's so simple compared to everyone else. This means that they have no room for error as there's no standout flavours if the presentation is poor, or no beautiful decor if the texture is a bit off. I think it's a big mistake to play it really safe!

I don’t enjoy these challenges - I don’t want to see how well they can make a flying plane out of gingerbread, I just want to see a nice cake that is immaculately presented.
I was watching an older episode and the challenge was Victoria sponge! I think Paul Hollywood would pass out at such a passé challenge.
It reminds me of the TV show glow up. It used to be about make up but has morphed into face painting. I watch the show to see make up challenges, not face painting challenges. Same with bake off, I watch the show to see baking challenges, not construction challenges!

I liked Liam when he was a contestant, but he was painful on that kids bakery show he did afterwards.
No! He’s great on the children’s bake off!!!

I can’t ever remember how many series we are at now but I think it might have peaked and it’s getting a bit boring. It was on bbc 2 as a sleeper hit when it was very charming and a bit amateurish and travelled around, then became a big thing on bbc 1 and gave us Nadiya who must be the biggest winner of bake off and then the channel 4 move to adverts took a bit of shine off and now it’s just hanging around.
I totally agree! I think it needs to go back to being charming and amateurish. I’m not sure but it feels like a lot of the contestants go on their to further their career, so many have had books out and cooking segments on TV.

Something nice from Aldi or Lidl 😂
I might have to go to Lidl and get some Lebkuchen- it's nearly Christmas after all. Although if they only have the chocolate covered ones and not the icing covered ones like last year, I might have to stage a sit in at Lidl HQ. German week is a bit of a piss take. At least if they do vegan week it will redress the balance a bit as Frey has been at a disadvantage but why not do another type of theme week?

Let's just hope it's not a repeat of Japanese week where they didn't even do basic research on the origins of the bakes they decided to use.

I think it is only fair they all have the same ingredients for the technical, and actually probably easier for Freya that she does not need to contend with vegan substitutes.
She is vegan and cooks vegan and absolutely should for the portions where she provides the recipes should she so wish.
Poor girl would probably be lynched if she had the audacity to make something non vegan at this stage.

Pressure is on for Juergen tonight, so hope he smashes it.
Giuseppe got so lucky with bread week pretty much being Italian week this year. He is my second favourite though.

I think either Amanda or George will go tonight. They've both been sailing close to the wind for the last few weeks.

Caught up last night. Freya going on about aquafaba really annoyed me. There was a technical on vegan week 2 (I think?) years ago to made a vegan pavlova so I think Paul and Prue know how aquafaba behaves. I baked along at that point, and didn’t find it any different to using egg whites, so she just sounded like she was making excuses 🙄

Gutted Maggie left, I really liked her but I do agree she was the right person to go. Also, Chigs deserved star baker so much, his desserts looked incredible!
I said that to my OH. I’ve made vegan pavlova a few times, never had it turn out like that. It’s absolutely the mound of wet peaches she stuck on top of it and not whipping it enough. I think it really highlights how immature a baker she is - pavlova made with egg white or Aquafaba is quite the skill because it’s so counterintuitive how much you need to whip it.
