I’m old. I heard “to Ralph” way back in jr high or high school before cell phones, internet, etc. I just heard some other kid say it and thought it was funny. Funny too because I had an Uncle named Ralph.
You know. Now that you mention it, I had to look it up. That’s about when I heard it…mid-60s:

Another echoic term, ralph might be used as a verb (“Sounds like Tom’s ralphing”), a common noun (“There’s ralph on your shirt”), or a proper noun (“I think Ralph’s coming round again”). According to the OED, the term originated in the U.S. in the mid-1960s.
