Steve Halliwell has not been well for years. He has suffered depression and heart problems and has a pacemaker. I remember when they gave him a stein to drink out of instead of a glass in the Woolie after he had had time off due to his alcoholism and had been found sleeping on the streets.

He looks quite yellow in his latest scenes, I'm not surprised to find out that he's had drink problems. He just suddenly looks much older, and he's clearly not well. At least he's still working, although Zak's character seems to spend a lot of time "upstairs" in the Dingle hovel.
