Emily Canham #14 No one’s in to say “Welcome Home” because poor old Emily had to buy her house alone

But this is forcing a lot of locals out, the Manchester property boom means a lot of locals can’t afford a deposit, the prices are so expensive like parts of Manchester are now comparable to the south! It’s ridiculous
Just like Cornwall and London before it, all the locals are being forced out and the place will be forever changed. Some will say gentrified, others will lament that the place has lost it's charm, all will be surprised when the remaining locals aren't welcoming them with open arms.

Emily has such bland taste, I can't pretend I'm breathless with anticipation as to what she'll do to the place. I'm going to guess a lot of grey and white, perhaps some granite or whatever she can blag. Huge mirrors, because vanity. Perhaps an upgrade of that IKEA walk in wardrobe she had in the flat. Alex draws for her gifted slap, Billy bookcases to show off her bags and converse collection. All sterile white against light grey or beige flooring. Wood if kindly gifted, carpet if not.

just a reminder to everyone that you are doing great. influencers showing off their very expensive material items/homes etc. can be disheartening but comparing yourself (while natural) is pointless.
additionally, if emily’s body checking triggers you, don’t hesitate to take a step away to protect yourself 🤍

I agree with the sentiments of those above. Please dont compare to these influencers.back when our parents were getting on the property ladder,no one started out with their dream home!the property ladder was treated as just that, you started at the bottom, with small 1 bed flats needing lots of work and then had something to sell and gradually moved on. Iv seen so many people in the last few years so worried about what house they would be uploading on instagram, buying new builds to keep up and many feeling really low, wondering how others their age were doing it as it was just wasnt affordable.bottom line,so many young people now are up to their eyes in debt,at the upper level of what they could get on a mortgage. Now the cost of everything else going up,those houses are not affordable. So many are living on klarna, credit cards and overdrafts. Its not a fun position to be in despite what many want you to think. If you dont have a big, fancy ig house,be happy. You dont have the debt that goes with it

Agree with you all my parents bought our house in the early 90's and have paid the mortgage off as it was 35,000 compared to crazy prices now but we don't have fancy purchases or holidays etc struggle to pay bills but at least our home is guaranteed that's what matters most I feel having a home 💖

To add a different perspective.. owning property/having a mortgage really isn’t ‘all that’. I bought my first home in 2018 and I’m miserable. Having a mortgage and all the other responsibilities that come with owning a home make me feel trapped. I can’t just up and go and move somewhere else because I’d have to go through the hassle of selling and solicitor fees etc. If I were to rent at least I’d know that I’d only have to wait until the end of the tenancy agreement or even pay a fee to get out early if I wanted. Once I’m in a position where I can sell my current property I honestly don’t know if I would buy again.

I might be in the minority here but I am a homeowner that is envious of those who rent🤷🏼‍♀️

I can definitely see the benefits of renting. When we bought our first house the boiler went in the first few months* and we had do buy a new one. If we were still renting we could have just called the landlord!

Just seems there is a never ending list of things to pay for.

I do feel more settled though than I did renting.

*This is despite it having been serviced just before sale and the paperwork saying it was absolutely fine!

No I can definitely see your point. I’m only a year or so older than Emily and I can’t imagine anything worse than buying at this present time and the pressure to have to take care of a home / fix things etc. I like the freedom of deciding where I want to be at any given time and move to a new city if something takes my fancy there…

Plus Emily has moved backwards and forwards from London numerous times, seems to think she wants to be in LA and wants to travel the world. I don’t really understand her need to buy at this stage. Especially without buying with James. Just feels silly especially if it’s in a location she’s never lived before (which I think it is as it’s clearly not like central London way and it doesn’t seem to be Kettering either).

I can understand wanting to own one day! But I think the freedom to not be buying at 24 when you’re not actually settled down in one place forever yet means it makes more sense to rent.

I should’ve given a bit more context to my previous message! I’m currently 29 and had just turned 27 by around a month when I bought my property. I’d never rented before and went straight from living with family to homeowner so I’ve never actually experienced renting.

Like @fidgetjo said, I want the freedom to be able to move to another city if I felt like it. I’m actually considering going back to uni to study nursing and moving to Australia or Canada after qualifying. I’ve felt this way for a while so why I ever bought somewhere in the first place is beyond me!

To add to what @Foxyrin said, the cost to replace things can be eye watering. I need a new front door, new windows and a new boiler which will set me back ££££ but if I was renting then none of that would be my responsibility!

It’s all hindsight I guess, but if I could go back in time and not buy then I definitely wouldn’t.

I'm in the North and we bought a really cheap house, I darent say hw much as is probably cheaper than a parking space in London lol! We new just cleaning it up and putting in new kitchen bathroom etc would double the value but OMFG I wish we had never I absolutely hate the house now, so much more was wrong with it that we anticipated. Its not even just the money but the stress of having to sort these things out. I would go back to renting in breath

The grass is always greener on the other side isn’t it 😂 been renting for 5 years now since uni and desperate to buy lol. Both sides definitely have their pros and cons, but ultimately if you own a home you are putting money into your own pocket each month etc by building equity. I also want to have children and give them a stable roof over their head, I grew up bouncing between rented houses and it’s not fun.

Worked out the other day we have spent close to 100k on rent and ultimately that all goes in someone else’s pocket! Hopefully owning isn’t too far off for us though.

Anyway back to boring Emily 😂😂😂
