That can’t be their ticket. The Gershwin is in New York and the Playbills are things you only get on Broadway too. (I have one from when I did actually genuinely did go and watch Wicked in New York!)

If my son told me he relates to a woman whose mother cheated on her father with a green man, gave birth to a deformed child who was detested and had an extremely difficult childhood... I think I'd just be really offended.

The other problem with this “relating to Elphaba” narrative is the focus on Defying Gravity. That song is only part of her story, and actually what happens after isn’t as inspirational and positive.

Spoiler: Wicked Act 2 (incase some people don’t know the story!)

In Act 2 Elphaba comes to the realisation that she can’t change people’s perspectives of her and actually ends up faking her own death so she can escape from Oz. Not exactly the “defying” public opinion thing that our Elphaba keeps talking about!
