Dr Niamh Lynch

She’s dead right that you shouldn’t be posting your kids on social media, you’ve no idea who is saving photos of your kids on their personal devices or what they are doing with the photos. Kids today will have massive digital footprints before they can even legally use these social media platforms themselves. It’s very wrong to be doing that to young children, even if they like seeing their picture on Facebook or IG, they have no concept of what it means, that the pictures are out there forever on servers ready to be thrown up in an instant by a simple google search. I have a child and I do understand the urge to share cute pics etc but I keep it to private WhatsApp with sisters only.

By default she is influencing though. As a parent in cork I wouldn’t know who she is without Instagram & I would pay to bring my son to her so she might not be selling spotlight oral care or Emma mattresses but by default she’s selling herself.
She works for the HSE though. She gets a salary, so it doesn’t matter if she sees 1 patient a day, or 101 patients a day. She can’t possibly be selling herself, you’re making no sense.

Hospital waiting lists are long whether private or public , I doubt she was hoping to scoop up a few patients from Instagram 🤣 she has no intention of making a profit or receiving PR and I honestly think if someone isn’t receiving PR or money from Instagram there shouldn’t be a thread on them. All she is doing is making videos to help children! I’d be upset if I was her too to be honest.

She works privately. It very much does matter how many she sees and she HAS appealed to very many parents (absolutely valid and she deserves) since her page popped up. She keeps mentioning she hasn’t earned a cent via Instagram but I’d debate that. I can see why parents would feel drawn towards her.
I don’t believe she was sent the thread as 1, it was so small and not well established at all. It was hours old and hardly any comments, most were indeed positive.
2, she already mentioned she had a plan of action for a thread appearing, making it clear she was well aware of here based off her own research.
Again, do not in any way dislike her. Just surprised by her reaction and find this thread interesting as a result. Some very considerate replies

My mistake.

My mistake. Didn’t know the Bons was private, soz.
She is a consultant
She is no way needs to “advertise” herself in any way or form-she had a long wait list for office consults long before instagram
So whether she works for a private or public hospital is irrelevant - the point still stands her Instagram account was not being used for promotion

I like Niamh’s page and found her informative but she was using her page to promote herself and like other influencers fond of the “loads were asking me”

Seriously she is outlining the admission procedure to the paediatric assessment unit in the Bons🙈
This is not “promoting herself”
That’s like an A an E for children …you’re not in an emergency going to tell your GP you want to go to the Bons PAU as someone you follow on Instagram works there …..

I started following her for the kids health topics but all she does lately is harp on about kids photos online. I agree with her about the instahuns oversharing but she is almost fanatical about it. Like most of us throw a pic up on fb or the team photos on the club pages. Out of all the things she could draw attention to like waiting lists or lack of services, she chooses to talk about instahuns. I can't put my finger on it, but the online photo obsession is strange.
She is the best person to highlight posting of kids photos online. Talking about waiting lists would be boring AF and amount to zero change.
The biggest gripe on this site, and rightly so, is the instahuns using their kids as content sharing their lives incl very intimate times and spaces. Anyone who highlights this and slams it publicly is a hero.
It’s can’t be talked about enough imo. I think the more discussion around it the more influencers might reflect on what their doing, how much they share and what they share. It may actually amount to some change 🙌🏻
I think club/sporting photos is completely different and not comparable to a child playing in their private space at home .

This is not the same as influencers trying to feign interest in something they are flogging. I have no doubt people were asking her as many not familiar with the process of accessing private healthcare for children. She has a full list and doesn’t need to add to it by IG promotion. Where’s the gain? You still need to be referred if your child has a clinical need. I wanted to know as I’m sur many parents did and would like if Bons in Dublin had similar service.

Niamh is legit on Instagram, nothing fake or qvc about her so I’m very surprised to see thread here.
I like that she’s not perfect like us all, doesn’t try to be. Tried to have a bit of craic when isolated with covid so what? S
She’s got a very informative page that’s been very helpful, been properly engaging and I really did enjoy the fact or fiction pieces. There’s plenty on insta that should be called but this is not one of them.

The discussion on this is interesting and had me thinking last night. I agree with this and while I still have to sign consent forms, I have tweens who are social media aware so i dont see the problem. Niamh said she started down this road because a colleague approached her after seeing her baby on social media and that made her uncomfortable. Which is why she doesnt agree with any childrens images on social media. But in trusted establishments like schools/clubs etc on social media sharing information locally about the kids names/ages etc is to promote their facilities. It's with good intention of course but in wider society when you see schools/clubs, educators with Garda vetting are technically using kids for promotion. Maybe this is why the big brands use the huns and their kids because its socially acceptable in wider society. The back pages of our local newspaper every week has pages after pages of children's images with names, ages and locality. Unfortunately all predators aren't Internet bogeyman but around communities too. If wider society didn't normalise the sharing of children's images then these brands wouldn't have a leg to stand on when working with the momfluencers. Until that change is normalised, from the bottom up, then what Niamh is doing in rightly calling out the big brands, will cause a stir on social media but in the long term won't affect what they do. Something to think about.

Sorry now. Her tiktoks are embarrassing and cringy AF. She has the wool over eyes. She’s pure mad to be an influencer. A
Doctor whO ONLY wants to share info doesn’t make tiktoks 😂 she’s picking topics that will
Make her ‘viral’ and now she’s pure raging she’s been called out
Same as the rest of them

To be fair id rather have her "cringy" tik toks that are done on her own time compared to the tik tok that's staged and reshot until perfect and shot in work like some of the doctor influencers

She doesn’t work for the HSE. She ONLY works privately. Always find it interesting when doctors don’t provide a public service..
Of course it’s a public service, its members of the public she is treating, they are in the position to pay her privately probably with the help of their private health insurance. She’s in Peadriatics, I imagine there isn’t a parent in the country that would leave their child on a HSE waiting list if they could afford to go private but the people going private are still members of the public. They’d probably prefer not to have to pay but the HSE is a tit show unfortunately. Would people prefer no private option and everyone on a never ending HSE list?! Would absolutely take my child privately if she needed anything, wouldn’t be waiting for the HSE to sort out the public system while my child was in need and I could afford to have her seen privately.

The same as the rest of them…. Who??? She’s trying to be more relate-able, that’s why she’s on Tik Tok. All Tik Toks are cringy, that’s what it’s about sure.
I only commented on another thread here on another influencer who uses her child as content, as a lot of them are doing, then children cannot give consent. They are out there on the internet for life now. She was dead right to call all the instahuns out.
Maybe she’s a bit sensitive, I am myself it’s just the way some people are. To compare her with to the huns that would sell their souls for a dime is scandalous. I really enjoy her content since I discovered her a few months ago and I hope she keeps posting. I have a gang of children myself and find her context for extremely useful to reference. She doesn’t get paid for it like the “influencers” do

Would you really think better of her if she double jobbed working in CUH and Bons so neither get her complete focus? New public consultant contracts are forbidding private practice so going forward they’ll have to pick their side. It’s crazy when you see the lists of consultants in Dublin private hospitals with mostly consultants from the public Dublin hospitals then everyone wonders why public waiting lists are so long?? No less capable a consultant for being private.

Yes I agree but don’t think it’s brands using the insta huns kids, the parents do that and choose to do it, therefore make them appealing to brands for freebies and income.
I think with newspapers they’re binned so quickly that it’s forgotten and gone. Online images esp on social media last forever.

I think Dr Lynch’s point is parents wouldn’t - couldn’t - do it if brands weren’t willing to capitalise on cute kids to flog their product and IMO she’s right. I don’t believe the parents are right to do it but the big brands are not innocent in this either. They know they’ve found an effective, relatively inexpensive marketing mechanism. They couldn’t care less about the kids.
