yes I remember that one! The pox was spread from the handrail of an escalator within an airport.
It had mock bbc news bulletins etc.
What got me was the ‘footage’ of when it spread to the developing world and people were dying in their millions, very relevant at the moment 😞

Omg I remember this, I started watching part way through on tv back in the day and thought it was real!

I don't really have a recollection of that one but I must have seen it and it must have affected me because recently it came up in conversation with my parents - I was terrified of smallpox around that time, and I requested to stockpile water and tinned food.
I think around this time (13/14) I was banned from ever trying to find Threads (I Love the 70s/80s talking head programmes being in the telly listing on the reg) because I suppose the last thing they needed was a highly strung teenager worried about nuclear war too.

I watched Threads as a teenager & it still stays with me to this day! Even seeing some of it as an adult, admittedly it’s not particularly quality cinematic piece but it’s still a very very harrowing film.

There was an episode on bioterrorism on Forensic Files, it’s not the one you’re talking about... it involved a cult, who created salmonella in a lab and then went around spraying it over food at restaurants 😨 really freaked me out especially considering the COVID pandemic, how easily something like that could be created. The programme you’re thinking of, it’s not ‘survivors’, is it? there was a 1970s series, about a deadly viral pandemic overtaking the world, and a remake in 2008.

There was a similar case in the states where a group went around tampering with (something like) aspirin... I remember listening to a true crime podcast about it but I can't remember the details! anyone else now about it?

Stella Nickell? She tampered with pills and put cyanide in them, it killed her husband and someone else but led to the recall of all the medication ( I think it was a headache OTC pill) in several states in America, it was big news.

There was also the group in Chicago who put cyanide in paracetamol, killing 7 people https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Tylenol_murders

That salmonella thing sounds terrifying! But no, the one I am talking about was called Smallpox 2002 (old BBC Drama link here)

That Tylenol murder case is so freaky, apparently it was only after that case that tamper-proof pill bottles were invented! whaaaatt!

I know how insane is that! I can't believe they never found the culprit, def give the smallpox thing a go, so realistic

This is covered in the documentary Wild Wild Country, it’s about the cult that did it and how they grew from a small number to taking over a town in Oregon. It’s absolutely crackers, I’m still completely baffled by it all about a year on from watching.

is this the cult that started to get involved in politics there? or am I think of the wrong one?

Quite possibly. They started off just wanting some farmland to lead a quiet life and then gradually started infiltrating the town by buying all the properties and doing all sorts of strange things.

yes it was this one! I cannot remember details but I think they formed some kind of voting block or pitched their own politician from the area

I haven't seen that but I remember a similar documentary about Brazil I saw years ago, all these children without parents who were living in the sewers, heartbreaking

Awful 😪 a lot of the kids ran away from abusive homes and when they track the parents down their attitude is horrifying
