The cap, I think, was for continuity. Steve had slightly longer hair in yesterday’s episode but his hair was shorter under the cap in Monday’s episode.

He probably had a haircut and because scenes are not filmed in the order they will be broadcast, they put him in a cap as otherwise he would have gone from long hair, short hair then long hair again in subsequent episodes

More than likely.

I saw an episode once were that exactly happened with Sean Tully.

Not related to continuity or corrie but there was a series of Friends where Lisa Kudrow wore a wig because she got a haircut. The producers thought it was too short for her character. In fact must it be the series where they have alternative episode and Phoebe's working in the stock market

Yeah The One That Could Have Been shows her real hair when she has it short
