Chappell Roan

I was like 😬 earlier reading all the comments from people who had booked flights and accommodation and now can't get a refund because the cancelled dates are only a few days away.
And coming so soon after the discourse around her Tiktoks and Insta post about stans overstepping boundaries and how she doesn't owe them tit. She's right about that, but I wonder if people are starting to getting sick of her already. Maybe she blew up too big too quickly.
I do love Good Luck, Babe!, and her album is pretty good too.

I noticed so many people are coming to her defence saying it was her management's decision and not to blame her etc.
I'm sorry but no one watches the VMAs anymore, she's already huge so she doesn't need to publicity. I'm guessing people who had tickets to the show were probably fans for a while as well.

It's just not a good look

She said she's not bothered about fame, yet cancels on her fans to do the vmas. It's not a good look (babe.) She contradicts herself.

I like her music, and can understand her wanting boundaries when it comes to her fans, but i think she came across quite rude, and like a diva with that video she did addressing it.

Said it elsewhere but she’s fighting a losing fight with this boundaries stuff. Yeah it’s not great that the career comes with sacrifices to your personal life, and it must really suck to get big so quickly as there’s no “prep” stage for her and everyone close to her, but this sort of sacrifice unfortunately comes with all those perks and money you get from the job. If it was as easy as saying “please don’t do this” the problem would already be fixed

She needs to stop lashing out at everyone and find a good PR person or team and get some therapy or other guidance on how to deal with this

Though honestly the whole thing is adding to more parasocial dynamics between her and her fans because now the answer to a lot of criticism is “she doesn’t owe anyone anything” and general sort of baby-ing

if we ever get as far as a 'next' thread 'Its not a good look (babe)' is epic

I'm sure the fans who are out of pocket will be happy to hear that 😬 wasn't today supposed to be the Paris show?

She’s a very talented and interesting artist but I don’t really like her attitude. I agree that boundries need to be in place between artists and fans but I don’t think she came across well in that video at all, and now cancelling shows at the last minute (which were announced before she blew up so really most of the people there would’ve been true OG fans) to boost exposure on the VMAs doesn’t look good at allb

She's talented but comes across as a head.

Thing is, by having the 'Chappell' drag, she could genuinely live a pretty normal life outside of work if she chose. Dolly Parton manages it because nobody recognises her without the blonde wig and the outfits, so she's able to go around mostly unbothered without these. But because Chappell continues to address her fans on tiktok and on social media out of the 'Chappell' drag, everybody bloody knows what she looks like without it so the Chappell drag no longer works to maintain the boundary! Doing lives talking to them like they're your besties also goes on to further mess up that boundary. Boundaries are fine, but keep them clear.

Additionally, she can't say "You're a random witch to me and I'm a random witch to you" to the fans then expect them to be just fine with her cancelling concerts to do the VMAs. Would they be fine with a "random witch" doing it? Absolutely not.

Cancelling her smaller level shows in favour of the VMAs seems like a poorly thought out choice. Especially since she's clearly already deeply uncomfortable with her current level of fame, and struggling to deal with it mentally.

The best thing to do would be not to alienate the fans who will still be there long after this really intense fame level has faded (I.e the ones who had tickets for the more intimate shows which were arranged before her new level of fame.)

Ultimately, the music industry is very fickle, and she won't always be flavour of the month (which will actually probably suit her, given how she's struggling with it.) She could still have a successful smaller scale yet reliable and steady long term career with a loyal fanbase comprised of the original fans who supported her long before she became flavour of the month and will continue to support her after.

That's less likely to happen, though, if she continues to cancel her preexisting commitments to them in favour of more flashy larger scale events. She's in danger of not ending up with a sustainable long term career by pissing off her genuine fans by treating them poorly in order to pander to those who have jumped on the bandwagon and will drop her like a shot once she's not the in thing anymore.

She needs better management. At least half of the incidents that grind people's gears could've been mitigated by a capable team, a team that helps her career and helps her cope with the new fame.
Whoever manages her now looks like a fecking amateur.

She needs to give up doing media events, maybe just turn up to sing and then disappear but never do the red carpet.

Screwing over fans to do the VMAs doesn't exactly endear you to her talking about struggling with fame and fans.

While I agree with the sentiment of her setting boundary post, she should have kept it breezy and made the post 30 words max. I doubt she even has much time to meet up with friends with one song blowing up at the moment, let alone be recognized out of character.
