I don't think it's as easy as one though. In the eyes of the NHS he's a write off. So he's in a horrible position where he's having to assemble his own team to tackle all the different issues. I.e. someone to deal with the liver, now potentially the lung and then JM with the HIPEC. The NHS won't do any of this but all the specialists expect certain stuff from them in order for them to go ahead, which is what he's struggling with. At the very least the NHS needs to give him clarity about his spread though.

Sadly, I think you are right about the NHS thinking he is a write off. I can’t imagine thinking like that about someone, especially as a doctor. In the comments on his latest reel, Rich has said his oncologist only speaks to him for 60 seconds even though he makes him wait for nearly 3 hours in the waiting room. Disgusting way to treat someone. It’s like he can’t be bothered.

He should have put in a complaint about his oncologist and changed to a different one long ago.

I don't think he can :( In both my experiences of loved ones with cancer, once it was deemed Stage 4 they were basically discharged on morphine and left to die, never saw an Oncologist again, certainly no treatment options. I think sadly unless you are the type to fight tooth and nail for your life, the NHS won't do it for you, even though they should.

It's really weird he's accepted it so long, he doesn't seem the type.

You do wonder how much bowel babe was able to throw at her situation money wise though - i imagine it was probably a sum even beyond bowelbro given just how rich that family was.

100% didn’t she have one painting worth £80k? She was absolutely loaded. That’s why she was such a topic of contention. She had care 99.9% of people will never even come close to, but she wasn’t honest about it. Makes me so sad to think people will expect the same investment in saving their lives and will actually be met with what Monique was. Or worse.

It’s was about £8k. Still a lot.

I think much of her care was paid for through a health insurance policy.

What makes you think that? Her & her husband were extremely wealthy - they would have been easily able to pay for her health care out of their own pockets.
He’s a partner at pomona capital. He 100% will have incredible health care as a benefit. Not saying they didn’t pay for anything out of their own pocket but I’d imagine the majority would have been paid for

BB situation was different, she paid for her care or had it paid for. I feel for rich, he's been messed about but tbh 99% of people accessing the NHS will currently receive terrible care. I say that as someone working within the system.

The problem rich has is that he's on 2 pathways, nhs and private. With the best will in the world this can lead to conflicts. Most consultants I've ever worked with or come across have egos the size of planets. Having different consultants will lead to different opinions and rich now finds himself in a horrible situation where he wants to throw money at the issue but also wants his treatment to be free on the NHS. He needs to pick a lane, because going from private to NHS is only going to lead to more noise and confusion. Its confusing for his followers too. If he's got money, and we know he has a substantial amount donated in the gonfundme, the he should use it for his care and get the pet scan. The NHS will not be able to offer him the same standard and speed of care private can, and as he's loaded he should press on ahead with the private consultant he saw yesterday who seems to be giving him answers. Unless of course he doesn't want to spend his own money, and if not why not? Why fundraise? He really is an anomaly.

It shouldn't have to be like this. The NHS should be able to cope. His oncologist should have more empathy, he sounds awful. People who have adhd aren't the only ones who want and need direct answers, everyone does. His oncologist shouldn't change the way he communicates so people with adhd are treated better, he needs to change so every patient he sees is treated better.

When you take into account:

*the cost of the scanner (millions)
*the cost of the technology required to run it & gain images (hundreds of thousands)
*the cost of electricity required to run scanner, coolant system & associated technology (thousands)
*the shortage & associated soaring cost of helium (vital to the function of the scanner)
*the hours of servicing required monthly (at least) by specialist scanner engineers to keep the scanner working (& other maintenance costs)
*the radiographers slaving away to obtain images that are good enough to be read (ie interpreted) - many scans take an hour or more - longer if the patient is (understandably) anxious / unable or unwilling (some are unco-operative) to adopt the position(s) required and/or remain still for the necessary amount of time to allow the scan (don’t forget many are in pain/ discomfort also)
*the (highly qualified) consultant radiologist who then has to scrutinise hundreds of images and compile a report

… £1800 seems very fair to me, I’m amazed it’s not more (sadly I fear costs will shoot up in the current energy market)

Really feel for the guy. It’s bad enough he’s having to pay for second opinions but when they all differ it’s a nightmare.

Withholding information is appalling. You can see his angst.

Dealing with all this when you are unwell and vulnerable is desperate.

I hope he finds a medic he can trust and get a firm plan of action soon.

I really didn’t want to start to topic of Bowel Babes worth as I personally always knew she had private care.

However, what I mean was she trusted her doctor. I am an NHS patient under a consultant and I trust him 100%. NHS or private, bowel bro needs to find someone he can work with and trusts.

Completely, but I do find it a bit harder to find this on the NHS - absolutely nothing to do with the staff (in my case) but they simply don't have the time, and while I trust them and appreciate them as people, do I think they are exhausting the options they have for me and do i think they are able to provide the best care available given the limitations of the system? - absolutely not.

It also seems to happen when you become terminal - care and help drop off as they realise they can't do much for you and basically leave you to die. It's a repellent attitude that needs to change, but i don't really expect it to anytime soon.

I imagine if you are shoving vast wads of cash directly at people the experience is a bit different.
