Baby Reindeer #4

As expected, the show received quite a few Emmy noms today, including three for Richard Gadd and four acting nominations in total.
I know there are quite a few people on here who think he masterminded the whole thing to get to exactly this point, but with a completely oversaturated tv market, I don’t think anyone could have predicted the success of this kind of show.

Netflix certainly didn’t make it thinking it was going to be a massive hit. It’s unlikely he got a lot of money in the first instance. He might have managed to renegotiate something since.

I think an acting nom is deserved tbh. He was fantastic. As was she.
Yeah this was a good deal for Netflix (despite the lawsuit). Unknown writer, unknown actors - not much spent on promo, and then it got maximum success with awards recognition on top. The Emmys are first, so I bet there'll be loads more coming from the Golden Globes and the SAG awards.

That document is a very interesting read, I find it a bit weird though that after spending page upon page listing how Fiona did things that Martha did in BR, the document ends with Fiona not being Martha, Martha being a character with different personality traits to Fiona and that he was surprised she thought she was the inspiration. That to me just doesn't hold up. You can't portray loads of identical events and then say she's not even the inspiration, she plainly is. I don't think it will go anywhere but I didn't find that very impressive or persuasive as an argument

He probably thought that as she's not a public figure , that he'd get away with it. Martha is nowhere near as deranged as Fiona though......I'm shocked that she hasn't been prosecuted for the hatred in the emails (under the Malicious Communication's Act 2010).

I think her lawsuit will fall at the first hurdle over where the case should be held. As everything happened in the UK, the US judge can throw the case out for 'Non Conveniens' - and refer the case back to the UK courts

Possibly, I do think he didn't expect the show to be as successful as it has been. Also Latham & Watkins are one of the best firms in the world so I'm guessing if flat denial of any kind of inspiration is the best legal defence then they're probably right, but I do think it's very obvious now (as if it wasn't already) that Martha is based on Fiona. I expect she has some kind of mental health problems if it's true that the police initially wanted to refer her for psych help, possibly she was already known to them...if she's smart she'll drop it now, all that stuff about her pubes is really weird
