My husband got back to his friend basically saying idea of the plandemic doesn't sit well sit him and if doesn't make sense for the world governmenrs to have planned it to benefit a few people out of billions of people. He said governments have to have disaster response plans (apparently an email got leaked with pandemic response... Who knows if it is even real). Also said he watched the video that he was sent it was basically nothing but fear mongering nonsense. Sent him a link to a website which rates news sources on now fake / right / left they are. This one https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/

Safe to say he hasn't heard back from his friend but he was fed up of being sent utter shite.

I love how it is always some vague "doesn't sit well with me" kind of idea, as if your "hunch" might somehow better be than tangible evidence  another travel youtuber I (used to) follow posted stories saying similar, obviously no scientific education but feels "in her gut that..." so ridiculous

I don’t agree with the whole narrative of people who believe all this ‘great reset, we are all going to end up in some orwellian situation/Qanon/trump saviour’ have mental health issues or any of that stuff. Mostly because I wouldn’t want to tar people with mental health issues with that brush.

But I do feel like there is something inherently wrong with people who really beleive, to be so detached from reality and to believe things with absolutely no evidence? So adamantly too? They also seem to have some kind of superiority complex.

Is it some sort of part of your personality or brain that makes you more susceptible to this stuff? Or just pure narcissism and enjoying the idea that you are ‘better’ or privy to something others aren’t?

It’s actually quite fascinating. I don’t know anyone in real life like this but those of you who do, do they have anything in common? Low intelligence maybe or perhaps have a very small world vision or something?

In my opnion it is the same people who end up taken in by cults generally, they are in a bad place and just need a community/answers for things etc. and kind of something to focus on outside of themselves. I have seen the same in people I know who join insane religious groups

They often feel disenfranchised.

I agree with above - I don't believe mental health issues and conspiracy theories to be linked. People could have mental health issues but that isn't what is causing them to believe these things.

I find it really telling that all these people post odd instagram or youtube videos relating to information or data but rarely or never post or refer to the direct source themselves. All their "proof" is via middleman and therefore usually already undergone analysis or interpretation from someone who thinks just like them.

Apparently there is a psychology behind it and the majority of conspiracy theorists are middle aged men. People who feel that they have little control over their lives gain a feeling of control by thinking that they are in the know - not sheep, when actually they are being fed ridiculous, negative views of the world that are reinforced by algorithms. It is almost impossible to shake that belief once it’s established. I don’t understand why Mike in Aldershot thinks he has access special knowledge and the rest of us are all naive!

This seems quite similar to the xenophobic/racist rhetoric used to get people to follow an idea. Giving people a reason why they are special or someone to blame to justify why they aren’t special (because they obviously should be 🙄)

For example general view that if it weren’t for immigrants taking jobs/benefits, all these middle aged men would be living the high life 🥴

yeah i was about to say this, the majority of CT believers for me seem to also be the kind of people (usually white) who believe BLM etc are discriminating againts them etc. they are being taken over... blabla...It is insane, I have a female friend who is now in a long term relationship wiht a very right wing tory ( she used to be quite left) started publishing endless articles from the right wing press... ok fine i thought, vote tory if you want....but for the last 6 month it has becoe proper CT stuff, especially about corona

Interesting given the theory that the blm is a Marxist movement

I heard over the weekend (I think it was on sky news but don’t have the actual quote) that a lot of the people who start conspiracy theories don’t actually believe them themselves.
they do it to create a following of...
oh the irony.... sheep 😐
Who will buy into what they post and speak about them in admiration,
And that’s the truth, if you see any Facebook/YouTube clips being shared, those who are sharing them speaking about the person pushing the theory like they’re the second coming.

I think trying to find any logic is just pointless tbh! It is like the whole anti- healthcare movement in the US (socialised medicine or whatever they call it) being , in a large part, supported by poor people without healthcare who are being fucked over by the rich who don't want to pay more taxes

I think this is probably true a lot of the time, I think this about Katie Hopkins (not exactly a conspiracy theorist, as such) but I think she does just spout controversial things to make a career, and I can see lots of CT doing the same. Easy way to make a platform I guess.

I feel like this is exactly how the qanon theory started.

Some middle aged bloke is probably sat in his mothers basement pissing himself over what he started.

It’s the damage they cause to people’s already fragile mental health that pisses me off. Spreading unverified nonsense from the likes of former Sunday People columnist and general nut job ‘Dr’ Vernon Coleman as if it’s a peer-reviewed thesis by an eminent epidemiologist. I can’t get my head round how these people’s minds work.

It’s the negative, suspicious view of the world and people that’s sad too - how awful and frightening must it feel to think that the world is the place they think it is - what the future holds for us all. I’ve found that rather than try rational argument it’s more effective to ask for an explanation as to how a theory would actually work / be beneficial to a particular group and often the CT runs out of what even they consider reasonable explanation! Failing that, more often than not it’s best to just walk away!

What pisses me off is that the CT's call US sheep! 🙄😂 They're the ones that are incredibly easily influenced on absolute bullshit. The people that share covid conspiracies are the people you avoid as they're so weird 🤪 They think that they're in the right, which they obviously aren't, it's so laughable. When life gets back to normal, I can't wait to say a big fat I told you so, although they'll probably come back and say it's a part of some plan. I wonder what the next bandwagon is that they'll jump on and like a dog with a bone, won't let go of.
