Alan Partridge recommendations.

Morning Fraus! I have a day with no pressing work to do (it's only taken most of half term to catch up 🙄) and I thought given the many references which go waaaay over my head, I'd try and educate myself on all things Alan Partridge. Only there's quite a lot of content, so I thought I'd ask you experts - where's best to start? Film, podcast, radio? Many thankyous.
Knowing Me, Knowing You (TV series) is a pretty good place to start. I know it's not where Alan started but I loved it. Knowing Me, Knowing Yule is perfect Christmas TV as well.

I have just this minute finished the podcast, and it's so funny...but I think you need to start at the beginning. The original "knowing me, knowing you" radio shows are on BBC sounds at the mo, I think. Then on to the tv shows on Gold, then the new shows on Sky for dessert! Total immersion.

I agree with everyone suggesting Knowing Me, Knowing You but also if you want a kind of idiots guide the book I, Partridge is good as it’s his autobiography and covers a lot of his background/references. Someone naughty uploaded the audiobook to YouTube 🤫

The Day Today is so funny I used to lose my breath laughing. It's a mid-1990s satirical news show by Chris Morris, and Alan Patrtridge did the Sports. We used to tape it off the tv and we had to constantly rewind because the headlines were so fast and furiously funny. "Headmaster prosecuted for using large-faced child as satellite dish" still cracks me up.

Thanks chaps. I'm about to go for a run, so if I can find the Knowing Me, Knowing You stuff on Sounds then that is ideal 👍 I feel like I'm about to embark on some kind of educational journey!

agree with others start with Knowing Me Knowing You then move onto I’m Alan Partridge. KMKY will seem super dated but it’s still so funny, but it hits absolute peak Alan in I’m Alan Partridge. I’m jealous that you’re gunna do this for the first time!

I was on a few flights over the summer and I watched the entire 2 series of I'm Alan Partridge.

I think I scared the person sitting next to me as I was pretty much howling and clawing at the floor with laughter.

Sooo jealous too. ‘To Kill a Mocking Alan’ still has me pausing playback to catch my breath. 🤣

Yes, and then move onto the TV series. Watch those, then move onto the other stuff like the film. I'd finish with mid morning matters after itds watched the film. .

And go back and watch the day today which is where it all started

You will never look at a travel lodge in the same way, or a chocolate orange.

The series I am most familiar with and reference the most (and I think this is the same for @Alansbigplate ) are the two series of I’m Alan Partridge, which are both on Netflix if you have it. Just perfect comedy.
Also - his podcast (The Oasthouse) is hilarious.

I worked with someone in the 90's who thought Alan Partridge was real! 😳😂

One of my Dad's many quirks is to struggle with both factual and fictional characters. We had separately watched 'Making of a Murderer' on Netflix, and after discussing it at some length, it dawned on me that he thought it was a drama when he said he thought the lead actor was very convincing. 😲 On the flip side, there was an advert for Stella Artois a couple of years ago which featured the supposed owner of the company living a decadent lifestyle. Dad stated that although he admired the business that he had built, he didn't think that he would get along with him if they met. 😲😲

I daren't mention the Man from Del Monte.

Frauen, thankyou so much. I found an episode of the radio show to listen to, and it was superb. I will hugely enjoy delving into the rest of it. So much to look forward to!

ETA: was going to end that comment with 'now duck off x' but actually couldn't bring myself to do it since I'm genuinely very grateful 😆

I find that really endearing! Bless your Dad.

You may change your view if you encountered him in real life. About 10 years ago, Sainsbury's were issuing money off vouchers to certain customers, and Dad had one for £8 off a £40 spend. He is notoriously tight, and would no doubt have been keen to maximise the saving in percentage terms. The store was busy, and there was a significant queue when he reached the checkout. His turn eventually came, and his purchases amounted to £39 and XX pence. Realising that he had miscalculated, he discussed the matter with the lady at the till, but was told that she could not process the voucher. Now instead of reaching for a packet of mints or whatever was to hand at the checkouts at that time, Dad told the cashier that he had intended to buy some oranges. As the queue behind him shuffled their feet impatiently, an assistant was called to the till, and went off to retrieve a couple of oranges to take the total over £40.00. She returned to the till with them, only to be informed by Dad that he did not mean those ones, and had in fact wanted a different variety. 😬

At this point, if a 5' 1.7" bodybuilding pescatarian pixie had kicked him in the shins, she would have probably done so with the blessing of half the store.

Your dad sounds amazing

For any Partridge fans, check out the ”Accidental Partridge“ Twitter account!

(my favourite ever AP moment was from Richard Madley (who else!), who said that he was “not sure about this European idea of wearing shoes without socks, because then where would you wipe your hands when you‘re eating crips?“
