Do you need to have watched Bridgeton to watch this really?

No i don't think you needed to of watch Bridgeton to watch and enjoy Queen Charlotte. You might have more attachment or understanding of some of the characters if you had seen Bridgeton. But still a really good watch.
I would definitely recommend it.
