Smug as usual

Ugh, she is insufferable in this pic. I enjoyed some early episodes of How to Fail but her effusive gushing just put me off her for good.
(To her credit I will say I enjoyed her novel The Party, so many of these pulpy contemporary thrillers turn out to be terrible, but ED knitted all the threads together deftly. Had a real Freud family/BoJo circles feel to it. I wonder how many secrets these Oxbridge-educated Literary Luvvies are keeping.)

She didn't come up with hungry bum, I feel like they've said that to increase engagement so people correct them. It's such a commonly used phrase.

Do I win a prize for using the term “mumble pants”? Move over Pandy, I’m taking your job!

(Mumble pants are where the trousers are so tight you can see the lips move, but you can’t tell what they’re saying 😂)

I never get why women wear trousers that don’t fit?! All the corporate women at my work wear girlboss trousers but they’re always so camel toe-y and squeezy- size up, they’ll still look skinny!

Does anyone else follow Emma Dabiri?
I absolutely love her work - she is an academic and an EXCELLENT writer with genuinely interesting insights. Don't Touch My Hair is an astounding book.
But I'm feeling really conflicted about her obvious foray into influencing. She's clearly started to take up lots of free trips, attendances at fashion week events and heaps of free clothes. She posts a lot about her love of fashion, but she's also (for the times) a quite outspoken Marxist and I can't easily square her talking about dismantling capitalism with her gifted trips to the Maldives and £1k dresses. Maybe she's decided to just ride this train and milk it for all it's worth, but this seems like a really cynical take for someone like her.
Also I believe she is mostly based in London hence popping her into this thread... plus all the LLLs love recommending her books!

I used to know her (also in London) through Irish friends. She started her career working in fashion and vintage. I’d say she’s totally earned a ride on the influencer gravy train. Milk it babe!

She’s seriously intelligent, has a family to help provide for and has worked super hard getting her message across. I’m not surprised brands are falling over themselves to get her involved. Hopefully they’ll do so for a whole range of diverse people with something important to say.

Good on yer Em I say! ❤️

ok I am seriously relieved by this response :ROFLMAO: and I know academia does not at all pay well these days!

ah i love her! she is just so smart and bright and has definitely earned her stripes, i get what you're saying about the influencing stuff though, always feels icky but i feel she does alot of good stuff behind the scenes. Also she interviewed Bernie Sanders recently waaah!!

I listened to it today, it was painful. Margaret Atwood obviously did not like ED and had no patience for the artificial luvvy gushing. She was quite cold and dry. I felt bad for ED at some points.
Oh lord I can imagine. I've heard Margaret Atwood being interviewed before and she is incredibly matter of fact, ungushy - almost rude tbh. A very guarded individual. I don't know if I actually liked her tbh but did respect her. I can't imagine flattery and waffle winning her over in the slightest, just irritating to her.

This has brought back a memory of seeing her doing an In Conversation at the Southbank Centre a few years ago… Gaby Wood was interviewing and it was DIRE. The contrast between the two personalities was painful. Gaby Wood seemed terrified of her!
