Thing is, there’s nothing wrong with having a nanny (I had several), but pretending you don’t (or not admitting to it which is precisely the same thing) is AWFUL, and unkind to other mothers not lucky enough to be able to afford that level of help.
Motherhood is hard enough without other mothers being dishonest about it.

‘Bonjourno’, Pandy?

So cultured. So well-read.

I'm going to say it. Pandora's latest newsletter tells us one fundamental thing: she's spending too much time reading and not enough time informing herself about stuff most journalists and writers are aware of.

It's a bit embarrassing to be sharing that Grub Street feature which has been dissected and discussed to death by now. Most of the cultural recommendations she includes relate to stuff that's been around for a while - quite the opposite of what you'd expect from a journalist/columnist/critic.

Do the Sykes family only ever eat jacket potatoes? Do they eat anything else with their spuds? Don’t they get bored of the same dinner? Much to ponder here.
A spud every now and again but what she’s probably not telling us is her freezer is stuffed with Cook and other expensive healthy ready meals. I’m sure the nanny cooks a meal for the family a few times a week, a Deliveroo here and there. They are not living off jacket potatoes so she can read ffs 🙄

And of course, she wrote her undergrad dissertation on Curtis Sittenfield’s Prep (viz this week’s newsletter).

Probably thought it was non-fiction.
I read that book (Prep) around the time it came out, because there was so much hype around it, but I found it so dull. I can’t even remember much of what it was about.
It might be because I usually ready genre fiction, and so lit-fic just goes straight over my head?
