Glasgow girl here and I am gutted for England. I was rooting for them the minute Scotland got the boot. They should be so proud of themselves for this Euros run, they have been fab on the pitch. As well as off the pitch, those boys do so much for many great causes. I’ve had abuse from fellow Scots and told I should be supporting England’s opposition but I’d never. Italy also had a great tournament, well done to them, even if they played a little dirty. Enjoy your celebrations Italian tattlers!! Bring on the World Cup!

i am so heartbroken for these boys but i am also so proud of them for bringing so much joy to our lives this year.

the bitterness of so many irish and scottish people is ridiculous. sad gits.

It's normal in football to have rivalries and given the rest of history between our fair isles I think it's pretty understandable. Also, most of those comments on here are clearly meant to be a laugh. Obviously anything obnoxious or abusive is ridiculous. But normal football slagging is grand and something fans from everywhere do.

As for taking off the medals, any team from any country would see players doing the same. It's way too raw at that point to be paraded up for runners up medals.

Considering there are hundreds of videos of England fans singing about Scottish fans yesterday floating about the internet it works both ways unfortunately. It seems like theyre both living in each others heads rent free.

Imagine living in a Union, watching what is supposed to be 'unbias' TV and seeing a pundit say 'England should be putting 6 or 7 past them' the pundits are not humble at all and while watching a game thats nothing to do with England, theyre not playing they talk more about 1966 and what England are doing than the actual game youre trying to watch.

Fwiw I think the England team are all v likeable, Southgate comes across like a lovely guy. I do actually feel bad for them today, its a tit way to go out. Im a huge football fan and Id never support a rival, its like asking a Tottenham fan to support Arsenal in the FA Cup because 'we're both from London' absolutely ludicrous.
 
I’m a Scotland fan, an actual fan who attends games when I can. I enjoy the rivalry and the comedy of it.

I wanted Italy to win yesterday, as per the nature of the rivalry.

I did feel bad for the players that missed their pens though. I think some of the critics are idiots. The so called England fans imagining they would do a better job than Southgate and setting out their own tactics today online has been fabulous reading.

Absolutely. Rivalry is part or football and as long as it is not nasty, there's no issue. Liverpool fans are hardly cheering on Man United in Europe or vice versa.

Also, much like you I actually quite like this set of England players and really admire Southgate. But a Man United could also say they admire Klopp or Salah but still want to see them lose!

what do you expect when practically all of scotland have made it their absolute mission to support any of england's opponents no matter what? fgs the scots having england's opponent's flags up is the saddest thing i've seen in a long time. it's bitterness plain and simple. why the hell would they not talk about 1966? it's the last time england won, this is the closest they've come to winning something in a long time obviously they would mention it. the pundits don't represent the entirety of england and fwiw i never heard them say they should be putting 6 or 7 past them yesterday. also unbiased tv? you live in a union why would the union not support one of its members? it makes absolutely no sense to say they should be neutral just because scotland didn't get to the final. if you supported anybody but england because you didn't want them to win then i think you're a sad git.

Sorry to point out the obvious but the “union” is probably the reason most Scots and Irish wanted Italy to win 🙈😂 English fans booed their OWN team off the pitch when they played Scotland, if they can’t support their own country’s team, why should anyone else? I personally felt the players have represented their country well but some fans, some, not all, leave a lot to be desired.

Also I won the egg and spoon race in 1991 but I don’t like to bang on about it too much 🤪😂

Why would the commentators be talking about England when England arent playing? It makes no sense. I dont want to hear about England or any other team when Spain are playing Italy or when France are playing Switzerland.

Rio Ferdinand said that, at the Scotland vs England game. Pre game commentary he said 'England should be scoring 6 or 7'

Out of interest do you think Man Utd fans are sad gits for not supporting Man City in European football because theyre from the same country? Its basically the same thing. Football rivalry is as old as football itself. I dont know any football fans who'd cheer on their biggest rival. In over 30 years of watching football Ive never seen it.

Fwiw I was neutral, I didnt wish England to lose. I wished for the better team to win, and they did. England were out classed last night.

Ive had Italy as winners from the start despite being Scottish ;) so money in my pocket.
 
I expect a fair bit of the racist abuse online was people from other countries (as twitter have said) like Scotland who have a deep routed hatred of the English and want to make them look bad. Outside of sport most english ppl don't have any bad will against Scottish ppl, but anti English sentiment is not uncommon outside of sport in Scotland with even their own government whipping it up and creativing division.
 
I'll admit I've not read every comment in this thread, but from what I have read I haven't seen anyone outside of England come across as actively hating England, in fact I've read quite a few Scottish posters say they were supporting England.

Yet on this page alone we've got practically all Scots owning flags of multiple nations that we all proudly dig out of our cupboards and fly whenever someone is playing against England, and being accused of writing racist comments on twitter in the guise of English people to make England look bad. You couldn't make it up!

Not all football fans are hooligans and thugs, and the few who are give genuine fans a bad name, but when it comes to the home nations there's only one that makes the headlines for all the wrong reasons time and time again. Stop trying to pass the buck and spin it into something it isn't.
