UEFA EURO 2021 #2

Must be so frustrating for Sterling and Grealish being dragged in the media for not taking a penalty despite it not being their choice. Glad Gareth is reiterating it was his decision.

Are you meaning you don't see that sort of thing happening in the Premier League? The style of refereeing on the continent (and this Euros) is different to England, they allow a more flowing game so relatively 'innocuous' things fly, whereas in England if you dare to look at someone the wrong way you're pulled up for it which makes play completely fragmented at times.

Yes you're right, I'm probably thinking of English League games more than internationals, we do ref a lot differently. Some of the Italian tackles did seem harsh, that said we got a penalty in the semis we possibly shouldn't have so on balance it all evens out.

Agree that Sterling and Grealish can't be criticized for not taking a penalty - what were they going to do, elbow Rashford, Sancho and Saka aside?! It was clearly the manager's decision, and Southgate got it wrong.

Actually feel for Grealish, wanting to take a penalty and not being allowed (or being lower down the order) is so frustrating; completely different situation of course but when my son used to play football as a kid, one of his tournaments went to penalties, he begged the manager to be able to take one (literally the only kid on the pitch who WANTED to take a penalty), he refused and ultimately son's team lost. It's more than 10 years ago and he's still miffed about it :)

I'm gutted with the result. I wish the subs came on earlier to at least play the last 15 minutes. I feel like England lost control in the second half. But I don't blame anyone or anything. That is just how penalties go. You can pretend to kick a ball over and over again in training. But when you are in a stadium it is a different situation.

I'm proud of our England squad. We have amazing young squad. I'm proud of Saka too. I can't comprehend how he must feel knowing at that second he missed that he would be vilified on social media because they always remember the last goal taker. That is a lot of pressure to put on the young boys shoulders.

The racism is disgraceful. If we won, I'm sure they wouldn't be using the disgusting language against them. These are the same men that got us to our first final in 55 years. Completely disrespectful to turn on them and spout off disgusting racist remarks.

It happens week in, week out though. Even during the normal season. Every weekend if a team lose, opposition fans will mock and abuse the players and fans of the losing side. Football really can be very toxic most of the time.

As much a fan of football as I am, I do find it pathetic that people, even more so grown men, become so aggressive over a bleeping sport haha.

I’m not an England fan but I am an Arsenal fan. I felt like a proud parent watching Saka this tournament. I always have a soft spot for the youth players turned professional and Saka has been at the club since he was 7. We know how difficult it is to make the grade in football especially with your youth club.

I’m looking forward to the start of club football. I’m glad we don’t have to wait too long. The Olympics and rugby can hold us over until then. Roll on this summer of sports.

We're an Arsenal household too, so know exactly what you mean. He's done so well, such a shame for him that he's not only now dealing with the disappointment of a missed penalty/ losing the final but the horrendous online racist abuse. Poor kid.

Appalling. How can people reasonably blame Rashford? What about the 120 minutes that were played without him? If England were the far superior team it never would’ve gone as far as penalties in the first place, those three penalty takers are being made scapegoats. As for the racist tit on Twitter, not only is it vile but incredibly stupid, are the saying they would’ve scored if they were white? Dopes the lot of them, the real supporters support the team win, lose or draw.

The racist abuse is disgusting. Your team lost, so you pick on the black kids. Pathetic.

I got into an almighty row with the parental unit over the England team taking off their medals as soon as they got them. I said it was petulant and childish. The PU said otherwise, they were gutted, etc. etc. Give me a break! I'm sure Denmark would have loved to have got the chance to go to the finals and relished 2nd place. We teach kids to be good sports in the face of a loss. I remember when the Canadian Women's hockey team took off their silver medals in South Korea and there was a huge backlash against them. You lost, so suck it up. It's not like these guys don't get paid.

Neanderthals gonna neanderthal.

These cretins have always existed, and always will exist. Sadly they often breed the next generation of cretins too. Social media just gives them a wider and often anonymous outlet for their views. The whole retweeting of it just amplifies the whole situation, making it seem like there are more of them, but they are in the vast, vast minority. Sadly, as with most things in life, it is the negative aspects that are most remembered, rather than the positive ones.

You could say this about any team? You’re allowed to be disappointed as an England fan or player they lost in the final even if another team would have ‘loved to do it’. It’s common in sport for the losing side to not keep their medals on this isn’t the first nor the last time it’s happened and it’s not a huge controversy in my opinion.

Taking runners up medals off isn't an English thing.

Shows how fickle a game it is and players are only as good as their last goal you're only a commodity at the end of the day.

I think they should get rid of the runners up medals no one ever wants them, who was to be reminded they were so close to winning. Look at Mourinho who said he would throw his caraboa cup final losers medal away, didnt situation, less important but still the regarding a losers medal. Also what team after losing wants to climb a them steps to collect a losers medal (I assume they did this from watching other football at Wembley, I was working so didn’t see). Also for the guys who missed the penalties it’s just a reminder that if they had scored they would’ve won.
