UEFA EURO 2021 #2

I'm not English but lordy I've got a soft spot for this team and Southgate. Their youtube has been great for BTS stuff all Euros and genuinely the rapport and attitude at St Georges Park seems really excellent. There's not much hope Australia will get far in Qatar next year so I shall be hoping for the very best for the England team and you all next year!

Pizza and Mario couple were a highlight. She legit looks like she regretted bringing him along and reminds me a little of that one meme. 😭

The England team have made it quite clear that they don't want or need the racist fans.

I said earlier that I stand behind Southgate and I still do but I really have to question allowing Saka to take that penalty. Like it has been said, saka is an adult and if he volunteered to do it then he did. But ultimately Southgate is there to lead and I would have thought he'd have some insight into how grueling penalties can be especially when they don't go your way. Just very questionable decision making at a crucial moment.

Even if he wanted to take a penalty and was allowed he should never have been the final penalty. You have 2 of your most experienced players who are both captains of the clubs and they go first and second? What’s Kane playing at allowing that and not offering to go last as the captain?

Don’t hate me but I am a bit disappointed in Gareth Southgate’s management during the final to be honest. Bringing players on in the dying seconds just to take a penalty without even giving them a chance to play and get a feel for the game and run off some nerves very rarely works out well. And funnily enough both Rashford and Sancho missed and don’t get me started on poor Saka. Southgate said he made the choice in regards to who take the penalties. The blame lies solely on his shoulders for that. It just wasn’t the game to be taking such silly risks and putting so much unnecessary pressure on players. They should have been brought on much earlier, they were stood waiting at the side lines for ages. Grealish should have been brought on earlier too, Henderson was a pointless sub to make, we just left everything too late and didn’t try to get the ball off of Italy at times.

That’s not to discredit all Southgate’s work during the tournament but I hope he works on his in game decision making before the World Cup because it was so frustrating to see such a shoddy performance at certain points in the game. At one point during the second half we had only 21% possession ffs it’s just ludicrous compared to what those players are capable of and what we have seen them do.

Hopefully we can do the same at the World Cup but this time win it instead❤🤍🤍

I have to agree with you, tonight's match was really deflating after how well we've been doing. Italy started off not so great but soon became better as the game went on, they actually had the ball and had a few close calls with goals and upped their game more as it went on. Even with Denmark I had a major headache and it was such a tense game, we started to panic but still fought hard and pushed through. I feel Southgate's management tonight wasn't great and a bit mismanaged, and he was swapping people last minute for the penalties some of which weren't the best choices or they hadn't had the chance to get in to the game and warm up in it. It's such a shame as we did so well and came so close. Saka had me in tears crying his eyes out and being consoled by his teammates. The Italian player saying "it's coming Rome" was only fair to say it on the camera after how the England fans have behaved and gone on. It's gutting we lost and seeing the footballers upset and in tears as it's their dream, but Italy fairly won and I hope they didn't get too much abuse tonight. The player who grabbed Saka's collar should have been red carded.

I can see it both ways, Kane going first as our best penalty taker can show strength. Also what if the Italians didn’t do as well/Pickford saved more, surely it’s better to have the best takers first as it might mean the penalty shootout is over before the later takers need to take one. I don’t agree that he should’ve been last with his age and the pressure but I also believe the best takers should go first.

Wanted to add I’m assuming they decided who would take penalties before hand, seeing as some of the players who took them had just come on. Sterling getting abuse for not taking one, it’s not like he has a good record of taking penalties and without him we wouldn’t have even got to the final.

That’s basically what my (very amateur level 😂) coach partner said too. Either make the subs earlier or don’t make them.

Yes, yes, yes.

I was surprised to get home and read the other comments. Gormless Gareth got it wrong last night. Aside from the opening 10/15 minute we were out played all over the pitch. I don't believe man for man Italy are truly a better team but they were better coached and had a better gameplan. It was clear for all to see from half time that Italy were about to score and Southgate changed nothing to challenge that

There was no leader out there for England and as the game wore on we looked more and more lost, if you're captain some of that buck stops with you, it was a very weak captains display from Kane. He didn't even have a touch in their box. What an over rated, uninspiring captain. Shaw was electric for 10 minutes and then stopped bombing down the wing - surely that was an order?

Gormless Gareth's tactics both got us to the final and lost us the final. It is what it is. Character building, or summat!

At least we have the football that really matters coming up soon.

Southgate lost us the final, our tactics were too defensive, Kane was nowhere, hardly contributed and definitely didn’t have Captain vibes, didn’t even see him trying to motivate the team.
we sat back after our goal and tried to defend for 90 mins, Italy outplayed us. I don’t like Italy’s dirty tactics, but at the end of the day they got away with it and showed us what it takes to win.
Grealish came on too late, The last minute subs were embarrassing, the pens from them were amateur. I can’t believe they practiced penalties in training and allowed Rashford to actually have that stupid tappy skippy run up as his actual penalty style. Wtf. Amateur.
Love all the lads though, they did so well to get to the final.
Roll on the World Cup!

I guess we’ll just have to disagree, you have trust in your keeper and you start well and end well, you don’t leave England’s first trophy to be decided by a 19 year old who’s never taken a penalty. Not when you have 7/8 other more experienced players watching.

Southgate has a world class squad and is a great people manager but he’s been saved on his poor tactics by the players being so good. Even Kane being captain is a joke, he’s never shown captain material and you can see the players think it. Henderson is the captain in every element except title, even without him Maguire should be captain.

It makes me so angry that these 3 young men at the start of their career are now being subject to racial abuse and will have their confidence is tatters because the manager chucked them to the lions. He didn’t trust 2 of them with game time but trusted them to take a penalty, where’s the logic?

This, 100%. We were clearly on top for the first 40 minutes. Italy changed it up and continued to do so after the break, but we didn't do anything about it until whenever Grealish came on, at 75 minutes? We should have made changes MUCH sooner than we actually did. We couldn't get the ball for the majority of the second half. It seemed like Southgate was waiting for something, but what?

I thought the ref was very fair, and if anything seemed like he favoured us, so no complaints there.

Italy were on top for more of the game, had the better chances, and Pickford kept us in it. We did not respond quickly enough to their changes, we had tons of fresh legs on the bench, but left it too late. Bringing two players on cold for the penalties makes no sense, especially when you can make is it 5 subs these days?

Anyway, the better team won so I don't feel too bitter about it. The agony continues...

Seeing the players with their kids/nephews has been so sweet to see - must have been so nice for them to be able to see them even if we lost.

i love seeing any professional sports people with kids, to see how much they love the children but also the lights in the kids eyes. Counting down the days until I can take my niece and nephew to Murrayfield. My brother in law won’t let me take my niece to Old Trafford because he’s a city fan 🙄😂

The racial abuse is the fault of the racist scum not the team manager!

Absolutely everyone should be able to go about their business without giving a second thought to what the brainless racists will say or do.

When Norwich and Ipswich play the away fans get a police escort out and away from the stadium to prevent any fights - I don't know why the same hasn't been done to protect the Italy fans!
That shouldn’t be happening, that the fans are so rabid the other supporters need an escort! Why does this happening in football? You don’t get it in tennis. Cricket and rugby you may get one or two but it’s never this bad.

Savills has responded to the racism from their employer (allegedly he’s using another account but could just be a rumour on Twitter, either way hope they fire him).

I'm gutted with the result. I wish the subs came on earlier to at least play the last 15 minutes. I feel like England lost control in the second half. But I don't blame anyone or anything. That is just how penalties go. You can pretend to kick a ball over and over again in training. But when you are in a stadium it is a different situation.

I'm proud of our England squad. We have amazing young squad. I'm proud of Saka too. I can't comprehend how he must feel knowing at that second he missed that he would be vilified on social media because they always remember the last goal taker. That is a lot of pressure to put on the young boys shoulders.

The racism is disgraceful. If we won, I'm sure they wouldn't be using the disgusting language against them. These are the same men that got us to our first final in 55 years. Completely disrespectful to turn on them and spout off disgusting racist remarks.

Just spent a few minutes scrolling the tag that's trending for the players and the vast majority I saw was people saying how ashamed, embarrassed and annoyed they are at the racists. It's such a shame that the minority of voices are amplified. Those people are scum and just looking for an excuse to act on it (or people trying to smear).
