Re: the engagement ring: I agree. She wears it well, but there is so much pressure and emotion around it. I do love that coloured stones/gemstones are having a comeback. But judging from her jewellery choices she might have preferred a way smaller ring. Not less expensive, but her choice of jewellery is often smaller pieces (hideous with a massive price tag). She very seldomly brings out the big stuff. But who knows, maybe she loves the ring (the style is certainly back by now) and feels very honoured.

Re: the horrible flowers of Mette Marit: they are really underwhelming. The purple, the stiffness, the mix with other materials- but it’s also very unique and then not. The use of botanical/natural elements were actually not that uncommon at the time. At least I remember similar approaches. But it’s more „conceptual“ work for the brave modern bride. Not your traditional girly princess bride. I get why she might have picked it, but it still was bizarre in my eyes.

I quite like the jewellery Kate wears, it seems she likes lighter stones and smaller pieces for sure. So I don’t think ‘the ring’ would have been her first choice. Who knows, maybe she’s grown to love it?

I’m sure she has… but it’s possibly that fine line between what is expected and what you’d pick for yourself given free reign.

Possibly even a more modern setting just to personalise it without taking away the sentiment behind it.

Past wearers of the royal jewels seemed a little less precious about resetting and reworking, Queen Mary in particular seemed quite adept at upcycling (if that’s he right word for diamonds worth thousands in the first place). Both the Lover’s Knot tiara and the Queen Mary Tiara are built round already existing items. The Queen Mum appears to have changed her husband’s wedding gift from a necklace into a tiara and no one seems to have suggested this made her ungrateful. Probably just another example of how tradition seems to have become more important to onlookers in the interim.

Isn’t Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara one item? And she based it around the Cambridge Tiara of her grandmother? I always get confused by them!

Thiugh talking about upcycling our diamonds (love that word in relation to priceless pieces!) this page has some great examples of royals changing the tiaras. The Lover’s knot tiara recycles the bits of the Ladies of England tiara (and based it on a relatives tiara of the same name, I think?)
the other one is the Queen Mary Bandeau (the one Meghan wore) and has a broach Queen Mary received as a wedding present as the centre.
I think some of Queen Mary’s diamond chokers have been turned into bracelets.
Queen Mary seemed to like her tiaras and tinkering about with them.
People had no need to be offended if a gift ended up reworked!

I really liked the Tiara Meghan wore. I think because it’s a bit understated, if a Tiara can be understated!
 
I've always wanted a really luxe book on all the royal jewellery and tiaras from around the world. I just like looking at them in detail. Would love to hear any book recommendations on this subject.

I don't like the tiaras with dangly stuff or the high, coronet-style ones that seem to be popular in Europe. I prefer the less ornate, bandeau ones that Meghan and Eugenie wore. Russian fringe and the Kokoshnik are probably my favourites though. I love art-deco in general so if I were royal I would be dying to wear anything from that era 👑

And the next time they saw it, it would probably be in a tiara.
I like to imagine Queen Mary with a big bag of bits, like my mum’s knitting bag, down by the side of her chair that she rummaged in to build a new headpiece whenever she felt a bit bored.

This is a great coffee table type book. I don’t have it myself but I’ve looked through it before when I was at Uni. Amazon product
It focuses more on the British ones but I think that’s because people have their own specialisms on royal jewellery so I don’t believe there is a book that covers the world…yet!

Thank you. This is a topic I've revisited several times over the years, and I'm sure I have looked at that one too. I really want it as the author seems to be the guy for this kind of thing, but I can't justify spending that much on a used book 😩 All the best ones about the jewellery seem to be £50++

I might take a punt on this one. It's not exclusively devoted to jewellery but the pictures inside look exquisite.

That is naughty, and completely goes against her son and grandsons 'green' credentials. She has used her power to save herself some money when other Scottish landowners with presumably less money will be expected to change to renewable energy. It's very shortsighted. If Scotland goes independent, the SNP have pointedly promised to keep the Queen, not the Monarchy, so if she is making her heirs look like hypocrites it will not go down well, and nor should it. I think the exemption from the Equality Act is worse but this is still bad, but the press will forget all about it very quickly once they are told to forget about it by The Palace.
 
I find Sarah‘s photos very interesting. They are highly eccentric and give off a modern interpretation of 19th/20th vintage clothing vibe. Reminds me of what they did with Cinderella‘s stepmother. Some are really bad but the others are ok. But constantly making money from her royal connection is so cringey. She was done dirty by the press and I am very ambivalent about her. On the one hand she hasn’t had too many options to make money in a dignified way (no job training for example) and I think it’s good she tried. On the other hand she is still partly financed by Andrew and was involved in shady stuff get your toe sucked as much as you like but don’t sell access to people).
The energy stuff is strange. I get why you don’t touch hundreds of year old buildings (modern insulation can actually be harmful to them and you might loose on certain grades of historical accuracy and stuff.) but there are several buildings on the grounds that have seen many remodels and updates so it would be fine to do them. It’s just a bad look.

The Court Jeweller is excellent and the commenters are very knowledgeable too. Two posts a day weekdays and one daily at the weekends.

I liked it too. I know there is controversy regarding it, ie, it is said to have been a replica of the original one so it didn't sparkle like the real one would.

The Spencer tiara Diana wore for her wedding really sparkled.
I wonder why Meghan wasn't loaned that one?

I like the ones that sit lower on the head. Especially if they twinkle magnificently.
