The Crown - Netflix

I can see the logic behind the fayed episode, but it was a little boring and killed the flow of the series. I don't think it was worth losing out on other royal stories on. It could have been covered in an episode next series when he turns on the family (he wasn't exactly an angel either, plus there was no real reason he would be welcomed into the fold as just another rich businessman, the whole point is money shouldn't buy you access ).
I actually think Mou Mou was my favourite ep and I don’t normally enjoy the ones that focus away from the main plot lines - I thought it gave an interesting background into how the Al Fayeds became part of society, Mohammed’s desperation to be accepted and loved and why he seemed to feel a kinship with Diana. Which I assume sets the groundwork for Dodi and Diana which must be early next season.

I really enjoyed the scenes with Charles and Diana in the last episode. No spoilers, but while I assume it’s an entirely fictional encounter it was very well scripted and acted.

I've just finished Annus Horribilis and think it's good so far. This season is so different to the others as we can largely remember what happened so are inbuilt critics. I was young but I can remember Mohammad Al-Fayed was always trying to ingratiate himself but was constantly rebuffed.
Also, with regards the random episodes, I think it's always been like that. It's a storytelling technique isn't it? I remember thinking the episode about the fog in earlier seasons was random but it did set the scene by showing the state of the nation and Churchill's weaknesses and strengths.
I think the casting of Andrew is great as he came across as a slimey knob.

Yes likely fictional but based on some truth I believe. There are multiple accounts that after the divorce and before her death they had built more of a friendship and got long ok

I’m about finished with episode 4 now and honestly I’m not loving this series like previous ones. It seems.. disjointed almost, it sort of keeps ping ponging about.
and who let Umbridge and Skinnnerrrrrrrr (Hot Fuzz) in?! 😂
I’ve started watching it, but am going to stop. Possibly because I remember this part of the story well, I realise how stupid some of the portrayals are, and their conversations. The Queen is coming over as a bit weak, which I doubt she ever was. And much as I love Imelda Staunton, I think she is miscast. She looks downtrodden too easily. Dominic West is Fred West, he did that part too well. Poor man. The mannerisms of the main characters are too contrived. There is more, so it’s goodbye to The Crown for me. Bollocks.

i thought that too. it very much laid the groundwork for next season - he was desperate to be included and to be part of a society that was constantly rejecting him or where he was never quite “right”, which is very much going to play into the parallels with diana. it was actually my favourite episode too!

I think (and hope) they just show the car entering the tunnel at high speed and leave the rest up to our imagination. Reading the events of the night and what happened it was quite traumatic so I don’t think it would do well to show it

I’ve just looked up the murder and it seems the most realistic portrayal of events that I’ve seen. I’m glad they didn’t show the doggetting hurt.
The thing is that whole family would have been saved if George V didn’t change his mind about them coming to stay here. He was more concerned about his own throne and position than saving the lives of 11 people.

(Some lighthearted news is that Alexei’s dog, Joy, who was quiet and had a habit of running away wasn’t around when the murders happened. Mikhail Letyomin, a Red army officer, took pity on the dog and adopted him. When the White Army took over the city, Pavel Rodzyanko, a White Army officer recognised Joy as he knew the family well. He took Joy to the U.K. and presented him to George V. Joy lived a long life with either George V or Pavel (accounts vary, Pavel moved to England and lived near by) and was buried in the animal cemetery at Sefton Law which was by Windsor Castle.
Unfortunately the cemetery was destroyed and turned into a car park.)

thank you for this! As I have read and watched several documentaries ect about them this episode really got me! My heart literally sank and I had goosebumps when it happened And the little dog but I’m so glad to read what you’ve put made me a little happier about it.
sorry off subject slightly. I’ve watched the whole of the series.

Mohamed Al Fayed is shady as f**k. That's why he was rejected. Dodgy business dealing galore and mixing with very dodgy MP's.
Not to mention how ridiculous he is as person. He used to walk around Harrods accompanied by bagpipers.

not denying or discounting any of that. i was only commenting on how they’ve presented him in the show, and how that portrayal is obviously going to come into play later.

I didn't mind the introductions of the Al Fayed's but I wish they would have included Dodi a bit more rather than focus on Mohammed. Hopefully Mohammed's characters disappears in the next season and we see more of Dodi.
If there’s so much on the Al Fayeds maybe a tv network missed a trick on their own mini series. I found their story interesting but I found it odd in the middle of the crown, to that detail, yet I’m sure there’s much more about them.

I’m sad to say two of the dogs did die. The one Anastasia was holding (Jimmy) and another one who was murdered later for making too much noise. I like to think in the final moments Jimmy and Anastasia gave each other some comfort though people will call me a sap for that.

This I believe is an image of Anastasia with Jimmy

Here is Ortipo with Tatiana and Anastasia (he was murdered later for being too noisy)

And finally Joy who survived with Alexei

I think that, when you are telling a story where the audience knows the outcome, you have to do it really well or it falls flat. They did a great job with the OJ Simpson American Crime Story but an awful job with the drama about Dennis Nilsen with David Tennant.

I guess the storytelling hasn't been up to their usual standard.
I think it went down with the third series. The first two were brilliant but the others have been hit and miss.

The Mohamed Al Fayed episode was very interesting and the actor playing him did a great job.

The tampon conversation was surprisingly tasteful considering. I'm warming to Dominic West as Charles.

Agree that Imelda Staunton is just not right for The Queen. She's almost there but not quite.

I'm finding the actress who plays Diana is just too thin and rangy. She's a bit nerdy looking. It's distracting and takes away from Diana's attractiveness.
