This is true: Mel C said the low fee was her reason for turning it down.

It’s not actually an especially well-paying job once you factor in tax and any fees due to agents/managers, then break it down to an hourly rate that includes not just the training and the shows, but extra stuff like ITT, other publicity appearances, and travel if you’re not based in London. There’ll be plenty of people in ‘ordinary’ jobs who are on a higher hourly rate.


There’s a potential financial gain that will come from any subsequent career boost, but that’s not guaranteed, and you might even end up sabotaging your career to a degree (waves to Seannnnnnn)

For a few it likely will be something they want to for the experience rather than solely as a paid gig, but I’m struggling to think of anyone who was on a career high who did the show as a passion project.

That said, over the last few years it’s become abundantly clear that it’s not all sparkles and ‘one big happy family’, and former contestants are being a lot more forthcoming about their negative experiences, so given that literally every celeb out there will know someone who has been on the show and has therefore heard the unvarnished truth, I suspect the queue of people who want to be paid mediocre money to have a tit time is probably quite short.

Do the benched pros rotate every year or is always the same ones who don't get a partner? Are they there purely for group dances and/or in case of injury?

Do the pros get a say in who they partner with, or is it decided by height, who's due a duffer, etc? Do the pros get to meet the celebs before being paired up? Imagine you're given someone you immediately despise 😳

Has anyone ever had more than one same sex partner? Could Nikita get another man this year and why is that such a thrilling prospect to me?

Do the pros choreograph their own routines? I know Nikita and Katya get a lot of credit for how talented they are, do the others also do their own routines or is their a show choreographer?

The benched pros generally stay the same but sometimes there can be a bit of a shock like the year they benched Gorka and last year when they benched Nadiya.
They seem to be there for pro dances and in case of emergency.
I think the pairings are up to the powers that be with chemistry tests etc which we used to see on launch night but they don’t show them any more which is a shame.
No one has had more than one same sex partner so far but the first same sex pairing was only 2020 if I’m correct?
Some routines are choreographed by others like the Charleston and the Argentine tango but I think they’re mostly down to the pros. Katya and Nikita are brilliant but I have always said Gorkas choreography is underrated.

1. It's often the same ones on the bench, but not a certainty. Neil and Luba are benched more often than not, but not always. Neil's been there since 2016 and has had a partner twice. Luba joined in 2018 and has had 3 partners, but last year is the first time she's got past week 3. Gorka's been benched once in 8 or 9 years. Apart from the Covid year, when fewer pros got partners, last year was the first time Nadiya has been benched since she joined in 2017.

I think it's rumoured that some pros have contracts that guarantee them a partner and some don't, but I don't know for sure if that's true or what it's based on if it is.

2. They do a chemistry read/speed dating kind of thing before the pairings are finalised to try to avoid any hugely mismatched pairs, but of course it would be impossible to perfectly match everyone, so some are bound to be a pair the spares situation.

Height doesn't seem to come into it as much as you would think. There have been a fair few pairings where matching personality seems to have taken priority over height e.g Bobby & Dianne, Tyler & Dianne, James & Amy, Tony & Katya. Height-wise any of those guys would have been better off with Luba or Nadiya but obviously whoever is in charge of the pairings felt differently for whatever reason.

I don't think pros officially get any say in who they get, but some pros likely have some more sway behind the scenes than others e.g. rumours that Gio campaigned heavily to get Rose.

The pro who won the previous year almost always gets someone expected to be an early exit the following year, but other than that there isn't necessarily a fair distribution of ringers and duffers. Some pros seem more likely to get someone good than others, and we can only speculate on the myriad reasons why that might be.

3. Not so far, and I think it would be pretty unlikely to happen this year. They've only allowed same-sex pairings since 2020. But eventually there'll be enough who've already done it that it probably could happen at some point in the future.

4. The pros choreograph the 10 dances i.e. all the Latin and Ballroom dances they'll have competed in. The speciality dances - Salsa, Charleston, Argentine Tango, Couple's Choice and Showdance are done by other choreographers.

I'm not totally sure about the American Smooths. They're technically a speciality dance, but they're close enough to a 10 dance and pros have talked about choreographing them before - as far as I could gather from Layton and Nikita's ITT interview that week, it sounded like Nikita did the choreography by himself. I think the assistant choreographers Arduino and Ash-Leigh might have some input on them. Actually, I think the assistant choreography team can be consulted on any dance if the pro wants some help. I believe Neil and Luba also are often involved in some behind the scenes choreography work. It's probably impossible to know exactly how many different people have worked on the choreography of any given dance, but generally the pros do the bulk of it. I think they can sometimes have some input on the speciality dances too i.e. Nikita mentioned on ITT that he told the Salsa choreographer he wanted a Cuban style Salsa, Katya's mentioned some lifts in speciality dances being her idea, one of the Salsa choreographers once tweeted that all the bad parts of Anita and Gleb's Salsa were his fault, lol.

1) Technically any pro could be benched but it does seem to be the same few every year. Neil is almost always benched and Luba was often benched before this year. Sometimes there's a shock like Gorka in 2019 and Nadiya in 2023. They are used in group dances and sometimes if theres an injury, like Nadiya was going to do Layton's Jive with him since Nikita was injured. But in 2019 when Neil was injured Kevin (who had already had a partner) filled in over the benched male pros.
2) I think height comes into it less than we think when pairing people, as we've seen with Dianne and Bobby, Krishnan and Lauren this year. Happened last year as well with Tony and Katya and Tyler and Dianne. Pros do meet with the celebs before and they do a kind of speed dating chemistry test, where celebs dance with each pro so producers see who fit well together. Pros don't typically have a say, but some of them have said they put on a lot of chemistry with a certain celeb, and of course they can speak to producers about who they liked. Lots of celebs have requested a certain pro, Annabel and Johannes for example this year. Normally last years winner (and sometimes the finalists) gets a duffer but it depends, Vito and Carlos both got good partners this year having made the final last year, whilst Gorka and Jowita got duffers.

They also mainly choreograph the American Smooth (its often dubbed just a foxtrot with lifts), but will get help with lift choreography. They have specialist choreographers for the Argentine Tango, Charleston and Salsa (as they aren't ballroom and latin dances so the pros aren't trained in them). Some pros are trained in additional styles (Jowita is trained in salsa so she choreographs her own salsas), but it isn't required so choreographers are always available for specialty dances. Couple's choice depends on the style, but almost always the pros have some input, and is typically done by a mix of the pros and extra choreographers.

I had a quick look on YT and one of the first videos that popped up was AJ Odudu's couple's choice. Holy duck. Was she a ringer? She looks incredible. I'm shook that's the same Kai that was paired with Angela this year. He's still handsome but why has he aged 25 years? he looks different now.

Height doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, also dianne always seems to get one of the younger one's, despite being the second oldest female pro.

I'm surprised how many people only started watching Strictly last series, or came back to it after not watching for a few years. I didn't think there was anything particularly special about last series (blasphemy to the Lakita stans I know), was it just the power of Nikita that sucked you in? 😛

Interestingly AJ was one of the best dancers her year, but actually wasn't a ringer. She'd never danced before, she was just naturally talented.

There's a reason there's a running joke that Kai's a time traveller from the 1940s.

His whole family are just those kind of people who look perpetually 40. The first time I saw a photo of them on his Instagram page I genuinely thought his younger brother was his dad or uncle. 😂 His 16 year old sister looked at least 25 as well.

I don't know for sure if they're still there, but the whole of the 2021 and 2022 series were on Dailymotion at the time.

Some episodes are here too, but a lot are missing.


They're probably around somewhere though. I'm not in the UK, and I've been able to find pretty close to all of the last 6 years' episodes online, albeit after a lot of digging.

A handful of full episodes from older series are on youtube too, no idea why they haven't been taken down.

Reddit also might be a good place to search for someone who has them on Google Drive.
