Not trained ballroom dancers. Robbie did get one shot as pro on DWTS Australia and it went terribly for him, one of the judges totally obliterated his choreo.

When I lived in Aus, I saw the series of SYTYCD that he won (it was in 2010 or 2011). He was amazing to watch on that and it stuck in my memory, but looked VERY different to how he looks now - in fact, it took me years to twig it was the same guy 😂

I noticed Jake dancing on the Masked Singer on Saturday behind Cricket so clearly get other work as well which is good!
Jake has toured with Kylie, the Spice Girls and a lot of other huge artists. He’s an absolutely brilliant dancer but just not adequately trained for Strictly unfortunately, good that they always bring him in for pro dances and whenever they need extras though

I’d be interested to know what level of training is required in each style, as majority of the pros now seem to be latin champions. I question what training Anton had in latin as he was always shocking, but maybe he was better in his youth? 😂😂

Higher level of Latin seems more acceptable to producers than ballroom.

Tbf not being adequately trained never stopped Janette.

I suspect Janette and Karen's limitations quietly kicked off a new policy of making sure the Pros were properly trained in 10 dances.
It does go to show fantastic dancers who take Ballroom later in life might look good but they simply wont have that grounding that proper 10 pros have in choreographing and training a celeb.

They also had the protective shields of Aljaz and Kevin.

(I don’t think there have been that many actual 10 dancers on Strictly? Nadiya is and Iveta was but most of them tend to specialise - I know Kevin said he went down the Latin when Joanne did ballroom)

Shirley apparently did Alan Carr's podcast: I learn that she trained Vito when he was young! (insert 'I bet she did' gags). Also confirms to Alan that Vito is not gay 😂

Graziano was basically beginner standard in ballroom when he started, not sure the bar is high for those dances. But definitely don't think we'll get a Janette type again.

Neil got some really loud cheers, was pretty much the only pro not with a partner to get a proper cheer. I was amazed that people liked him? I thought we had all agreed he was a creepy weirdo? 🤣🤣🤣

Think he just does a good job hamming it up for the crowds. But I wasn't taken in - personally just find his 'jester' act sad and his dancing cringey on both TV and in person.

Neil really does make me cringe. I almost feel sorry for him as he is so try hard and keen to be popular and liked, then I remember he’s in his 40’s and I’m back to cringing. I’ve not been to the show yet but on the videos I’ve seen he looks so out of place with the rest of the dancers.

There's a fine line between being able to laugh at yourself and just looking a bit of a saddo, for me Neil crosses that line.

Can someone explain this or point me to where it’s all been discussed before…I’m intrigued!!

Basically, a 10 dance pro will (theoretically) be equally trained and strong in the 5 standard ballroom and 5 standard Latin dances. Often, though pros will be either ballroom or Latin specialists — or, in the case of some of the SYTYCD lot that Gilkinson shipped in, neither: Janette was a salsa dancer who was allegedly given a crash course in ballroom when she joined (and it showed, especially in her choreography), Karen is a kind of ‘generalist’ who did ballet/contemporary and took up ballroom/Latin later.

Iveta, Aliona & Aljaz were 10 dance competitors/champions, for example, and probably several others that I can’t think of just now, but not all of the pros.
---
And on the subject of ballroom/Latin expertise, in the early days John Byrnes used to watch the rehearsal footage and give Craig notes on what to say as a critique. I learned this from a student of his who used to watch the rehearsal footage with him.
